Can I combine a 16-bit and 32-bit card in my laptop?

Yes. You can combine a 16-bit and 32-bit card as long as you are using a CardBus compatible laptop. Virtually all new laptops since 1997 are CardBus capable. A CardBus compatible laptop can accommodate either type of card. Older, 16-bit laptops can only accommodate 16-bit cards.
