How to use the Intel® WiDi Widget

Introducing: Intel® WiDi Widget

Intel® Wireless Display (WiDi) enables a user to project a notebook PC’s display to a TV wirelessly. The full desktop, including media and productivity applications, are captured and sent to the TV in full HD resolution, using a dedicated WiFi (802.11n) connection. This is great for watching movies or sharing documents or web pages with lots of people. With Intel WiDi, you no longer have to crowd around a small screen to share stuff from your PC!

Most people use Intel WiDi in duplicate mode, where the same content appears on the laptop screen and the HDTV, at the same time. But what if you want to play a movie and check your email?

Did you know that you can show separate content on the laptop and HDTV at the same time? Intel ® WiDi Widget makes this super-easy!

The Intel® WiDi Widget is an app for your Intel WiDi-enabled PC that allows you to place any Windows program on the HDTV, with a single click. With the Intel WiDi Widget, you can easily watch a movie on Netflix* or Youtube* on the HDTV while you browse the web or check your email on your laptop.

What’s new for WiDi Widget 1.1

  • Power User Menu – a drop down that allows you to send any open window to the TV.
  • Media players – Windows* Media Player, Cyberlink* PowerDVD*, Arcsoft* TotalMedia, Sonic* RoxioNow, Corel* WindDVD*, and Toshiba* Video Player automatically go to full screen on the TV. Windows Media Center will maximize.

What you’ll need
Requires an Intel® Wireless Display enabled PC, compatible adapter and TV. 1080p and Blu-ray or other protected content playback only available on 2nd gen Intel® Core™ processor-based PCs with built-in visuals enabled, a compatible adapter and media player, and supporting Intel WiDi software and graphics driver installed. Consult your PC manufacturer. For more information, see www.intel.com/go/widi.

Note Intel WiDi Widget 1.0 requires Microsoft Windows Home Premium*, 32 or 64-bit (service pack 1 is supported).

Note

We recommend upgrading to Intel WiDi v2.1 at the same time, as Widget will automatically setup your WiDi connection if you have WiDi 2.1 installed.

Intel WiDi Widget works with previous versions of Intel Wireless Display and even HDMI or VGA cables, but single-click two-screen setup is not supported. Users of previous versions must first connect to a TV adapter using the Intel WiDi software UI, then open Intel WiDi Widget.

Before using Intel WiDi Widget

  1. Open the Intel® WiDi application.
  2. Connect to your TV adapter.
  3. Click Properties, select the Adapter tab, and check the box next to “Automatically connect to this adapter”.
Note This step needs to be performed just once.
  4. Close the WiDi application.

Installing Intel WiDi Widget

  1. Download the Intel WiDi Widget installation file to an easily accessible folder.
  2. Navigate to the location of the Intel WiDi Widget file. Double click on WiDiWidget.msi, to initiate the software install.
  3. Click Accept/OK to accept the license and continue.
Note If you have trouble installing this way, right click on the file and select “Run as Administrator.” Accept the User Access Control notification to install.

Using Intel WiDi Widget

  1. Open the program (e.g. Windows Media player) that you’d like to place on the TV.
  2. Start the Intel WiDi Widget from the desktop icon or from the Start menu ( All Programs > Intel Corporation > Intel® WiDi Widget ).
Note The Intel WiDi application should start as well, but remain minimized in the menu bar.

Intel WiDi Widget started, but not ready to connect (gray ring).

  3. Wait until the “Scan Complete” message appears in the system tray and the indication ring in the Widget turns BLUE.
Note The Intel WiDi Widget will stay on top of all other applications. Click the minimize button in the upper right to hide it. Click the Intel WiDi Widget icon in the menu bar or system tray to bring it back.

  4. Click the round Transfer button. A WiDi connection should automatically be established to the default TV adapter and your application should move to the TV in full screen. The ring will turn green and the program name and icon appear in the expanded Intel Widget.

Helpful Hint: Are you clicking the button and nothing is happening? Make sure you have an active program window visible on your laptop screen (not minimized). You need to be able to see the program window you want to send to the TV before clicking the WiDi Widget button.

Helpful Hint: This works well with Full Screen movies. Simply start the movie on your laptop’s screen, go to full screen, then click the Transfer button. The movie should appear on the TV in full screen! Click the Transfer button again to move it back to the main screen to close it or control it (play/stop/pause).

  5. Click the Transfer button again to return the program to the laptop’s screen. Note that the Intel Widi connection remains, and you may see your desktop background on the TV.

  6. You can send any open application by opening the Power User menu and clicking on it.

  7. When your application is on the TV, the arrow will turn around in the power user menu, indicating that you can bring it back.

  8. Minimize the Widget using the “-“ button in the upper right. Close the Widget using the “X” in the upper right. Note that the Intel WiDi application should close as well.
