What is a Profile?
A profile is a saved group of network settings. Profiles are displayed in the Profile List. Profiles are useful when moving from one WiFi network to another. Different profiles can be configured for each WiFi network. Profile settings include the network name (SSID), operating mode, and security settings.
Connect to a Profile
When you are in range of a WiFi network that has a matching profile you are automatically connected to that network. If a network with a lower priority profile is also in range you can force the connection to that lower profile.
To start Intel® PROSet/Wireless, use one of the following methods:
- Click Start > All Programs > Intel PROSet Wireless > WiFi Connection Utility .
- Right-click the Taskbar icon
located in the lower right corner of your Windows* Desktop to open the Taskbar menu. Click Configure WiFi .
- Double-click the Taskbar icon to open Intel PROSet/Wireless.
Automatic creation of a profile when you connect to a WiFi network.
- Select a network from the WiFi Networks list.
- Click Connect.
- If the WiFi network requires a WEP password or encryption key, you are prompted to enter this information prior to connection. To change the security options, click Advanced to open the Create Wireless Profile Security Settings.
- Click OK to connect. A profile is created and added to the Profiles list. Click Profiles from the main window to see the newly created profile.
The Create WiFi Profile manager guides you through the settings required to connect with the WiFi network. At completion, the profile is saved and added to the Profiles list. Since these WiFi settings are saved, the next time you are within range of this WiFi network you are automatically connected.

Profiles List
The profile list displays a list of existing profiles. When you come within range of a WiFi network, Intel PROSet/Wireless scans the Profile List to see if there is a match. If a match is found, you are automatically connected to the network.

Profiles List Icons
The network profile status icons indicate whether the adapter is associated with a network, the type of operating mode being used, and whether security encryption is enabled. These icons display next to the profile name in the profile list.
Profile Name Profiles are network settings that allow your WiFi adapter to connect to a network access point(Network [Infrastructure] mode) or computer (Device to Device (ad hoc) mode) which does not use an access point.
Network Name Name (Profile Name or SSID) The name of the network that the adapter is connected to. The Name column displays the SSID or the Profile name if a profile for the network is available.
Connection Icons
The following network profile status icons indicate different connection states of the adapter with a WiFi network, type of operating mode being used, and whether network security is being used.
Blue circle The WiFi adapter is associated with an access point or computer (ad hoc mode). If a profile has 802.1x security enabled, this indicates that the WiFi adapter is associated and authenticated. Indicates Infrastructure mode.
