Create an ad hoc WiFi network without security on Windows Vista*

Use the following steps to create an ad-hoc WiFi network without security on Microsoft* Windows Vista*.

Notes: Connecting to any type of computer network, WiFi included, without implementing security is not a recommended practice. This document is provided for basic configuration purposes only.

An ad hoc WiFi network (also known as a peer-peer network) is a temporary network used when an access point (AP) or broadband WiFi router is not available. It allows users to wirelessly connect directly to each others' mobile devices.
  1. Access the Network and Sharing Center using Start » Network » Network and Sharing Center or another method.
  2. Select Manage wireless networks.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Click Create an ad hoc network.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Enter a network name.
  7. Select No authentication (Open) as the Security Type.
  8. Select Start this connection automatically if you would like to use this network when using WiFi.
  9. Click Next. The ad hoc network is now ready for use.


Access the Network and Sharing Center

  • Start » Control Panel » Network and Internet » Network and Sharing Center » Manage wireless networks
  • Start»Network » Network and Sharing Center » Manage wireless networks
  • Right-click mouse on System Tray icon (2 computer monitors image at lower right of screen) » Network and Sharing Center » Manage wireless networks
