General Protection Fault (Blue Screen) May Occur With Old Adapter Drivers

Symptom(s):
Microsoft Windows* operating system will display a 'Blue Screen' known as a General Protection Fault.

Cause:
Old Intel wireless adapter drivers are not compatible with many newer Access Points.

Solution:
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG and 2915ABG Network Connections:

Recommended Fix
  1. Download the latest device drivers through http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/. Select the appropriate adapter link and then click 'Download Software' under Software & Drivers. You will be prompted to choose an operating system. Continue as directed and then download the latest driver-only package.
  2. Extract these drivers to your computer using WinZip* or a similar tool.
  3. Double-click 'iProdifx.EXE'. This executable file will automatically install the latest drivers.
  4. Reboot computer to ensure the installation process completes properly.

Note: You may alternatively choose to install or upgrade to the latest Intel® PROSet/Wireless Network Connection Software package, which automatically installs the updated drivers.

Workarounds
  1. If you choose not to install the latest drivers, either through the driver-only package or Intel PROSet/Wireless software, a workaround is to disable WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia*) on newer Access Points (AP) possessing this feature. Specifically relevant to Cisco* Aironet APs, additionally disable 'Aironet IE.'
  2. The following workaround is applicable only to enterprise environments utilizing Cisco Lightweight Access Points (LWAP) in a WLAN Controller environment:

Disable MFP globally on the Wireless LAN Controller (WLC):

(controller) » config wps mfp disable

This can also be enabled/disabled on a per-WLAN basis with:

(controller) » config wlan mfp protection disable <WLAN id>
Note: Cisco also recommends upgrading to the latest Intel drivers or Intel PROSet/Wireless software package instead of the aforementioned workarounds.
