Cannot connect to the internet

If you cannot connect to the Internet, verify the following:

Verify Connections
ISP Username and Password
Network Configuration is Limited to One Router
Supported Internet Protocol
Broadband Modem Can Connect to Internet

Verify Connections
Verify your connection between the router, Intel® Viiv™ technology-based PC, and broadband modem is correct.

Verify the Ethernet network cable coming from the modem is plugged into the Internet port on the router, and that the cable from the Intel Viiv technology-based PC is plugged into one of the numbered ports on the router.

Solution : If network connections are not set correctly, complete the following steps:

  1. Start with the Intel Viiv technology-based PC connected to the modem by an Ethernet network cable.
  2. Verify you can access the Internet. If you cannot access the Internet, contact your Internet service provider (ISP). If you can connect to the Internet, continue to the next step.
  3. Turn the modem off. See modem manufacturer’s documentation for instructions.
  4. Disconnect the Ethernet network cable from the Intel Viiv technology-based PC. (The other end should be connected to the modem.)
  5. Connect the same end of the cable to the Internet port on the router. (This port is often labeled ‘Internet.’)

  6. Connect a second Ethernet network cable to one of the numbered ports on the router.

  7. Connect the other end of that cable to the Ethernet port on the Intel Viiv technology-based PC.

  8. Power on the modem. See router manufacturer’s documentation for instructions on turning router on/off.
  9. Power on the router. This is usually done by plugging the power cord into the router and electrical outlet.

Now, verify your Internet connection.

ISP Username and Password

If your ISP requires a username and password to connect to the Internet, verify it is entered correctly.

Solution : If the username and password is incorrect, enter the correct username and password.

Network Configuration is Limited to One Router
If you are using more than one router, Intel Viiv technology may not recognize the routers as Intel Viiv technology verified.

Solution : Set up your home network using only one router. See Connecting an Intel Viiv Technology Verified Router for detailed steps on setting your home network.

Supported Internet Protocol
Verify you have one of the following Internet protocols:
  • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
  • Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet broadband (PPPoE)

Intel Viiv technology does not support the following Internet protocols:

  • Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM (PPPoA)
  • Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
  • Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)
  • Static Internet Protocol (static IP)

Contact your ISP to verify what type of protocol you have if you cannot connect to the Internet.

Broadband Modem Can Connect to the Internet
Temporarily remove the router from the home network and verify you can connect to the Internet. This verifies that your broadband connections is working.

Solution : To add the router after you have Internet access, use the router manufacturer’s software.

When the router is set up, register it with Intel® Viiv™ software by selecting network map and changing the router from unknown to approved. Complete the following steps from the Intel Viiv technology-based PC to change the router to an approved device:

  1. Start the Intel Viiv software.
  2. From the Intel Viiv settings, select view network map .
The device should be visible on the map but is identified with an unknown icon (question mark).
  3. Click on the router icon.
  4. Select next .
  5. Select approved and next .
  6. Select a device type and next .
  7. Select yes to give the device access to the Intel Media Server.
