General

This document contains troubleshooting instructions for the CreditCard Token-Ring Adapter IIPS (CT2) with Microsoft* Windows 95.

Precautions

Persons carrying out the instructions in this document should be familiar with the use of Microsoft Windows* 95. Utilizing this information in an incorrect manner may adversely affect the operation of your CreditCard Token-Ring Adapter II PS and the Windows 95 operating system. If you are not familiar with the functions found within this document, PLEASE consult your network administrator or someone familiar with Windows 95 and the installation of PCMCIA adapters.

To perform the following troubleshooting steps and driver installation, you will also need to have the Windows* 95 installation diskettes or product CDROM on hand. If Windows 95 came pre-installed on the laptop the installation files should be in the WINDOWS\\OPTIONS\\CABS subdirectory.

Please Read These Important Notes Before Proceeding

  1. Verify with the computer's hardware manufacturer that the computer is using the latest BIOS version available and the computer has been verified to be 100% compatible with the Windows* 95 operating system. Another resource to use is the Windows* 95 Compatibility List from Microsoft*.

  2. Verify the Token-Ring cable of your CT2-16 is connected to both the CT2 adapter and the active network ring (MAU). The CT2 adapter WILL NOT be detected or install properly if the cable is not connected prior to inserting the adapter into the computer's PCMCIA slot.

  3. If you do not have driver version 3.50 or later, download the latest driver version (CT2DRV.EXE) from Support web site.

Please review the README.TXT file, included with the latest driver set, for current information regarding these drivers.

  4. If you are upgrading from a previous driver version please follow the procedure detailed in UNINSTAL.TXT before proceeding. UNINSTAL.TXT is found on the 3.50 Network Drivers disk or archive file CT2DRV.EXE.

Troubleshooting the Installation

If Windows 95 fails to auto-detect the adapter when inserted (after a cold boot) please do the following:

  1. Perform a complete shut down of the operating system, then turn the computer power off. Remove the CT2 adapter from the PCMCIA slot, then turn the computer on and allow Windows* 95 boot completely.

  2. Right click My Computer, select Properties, then choose the Device Manager tab.

  3. Locate the PCMCIA socket entry in the installed device list. If present, double click this entry (or click the + displayed to the left of the entry) to view the type of PCMCIA controller in use by the computer. If the PCMCIA controller icon is covered by a yellow exclamation point (!) close the Device Manager by clicking Cancel.

Open the Control Panel and double click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon. The PCMCIA Wizard should appear to assist with installing PCMCIA support. Accept the default answer No to each question by clicking Next. When complete click Finish then click Yes to restart the computer. The computer should power completely off and will require the user to initiate power on. After booting the computer verify that the yellow exclamation points are no longer present for the PCMCIA controllers, then skip to step 5. Proceed to step 4 if this is not the case.

  4. If 'PCMCIA Socket' is not listed after rebooting, or the PCMCIA Socket device entry remains with a red "X" or yellow exclamation point"!" over the icon then PCMCIA controllers are not properly installed.

Please Note: PCMCIA adapters WILL NOT function in Windows* 95 without the proper PCMCIA Controller chipset installed and functioning correctly. If you have any doubts as to whether your computer's PCMCIA controllers are installed and functioning properly, please contact your computer manufacturer for assistance.

  5. Copy the downloaded file (CT2DRV.EXE) to an empty directory on the computer's hard drive. Extract the file by running CT2DRV.EXE from a DOS prompt. If you prefer to put the drivers on a floppy disk, use the command CT2DRV A: to extract the drivers directly to the floppy.

  6. Run the utility SETUP95.BAT from the directory created in step 5 or from floppy disk. Type "exit" at the DOS prompt to return to the Windows* 95 desktop.

  7. Insert the CT2 adapter. Windows* 95 should autodetect the adapter and prompt for the Manufacturer's disk or start the Device Driver Wizard, depending on the Windows* 95 version in use.

Click 'OK' or 'Next'. The installer will search the A: drive for the driver. If the driver is on the hard drive enter the appropriate path to these files. If running Windows 95 OSR2 it is necessary to click the Other location button before entering the path to these files.

If prompted for Windows* 95 source files change the search path to C:\\WINDOWS\\OPTIONS\\CABS. If the Windows 95 files are not found in that subdirectory you will need the Windows 95 disks or product CDROM.

  8. If the 'New Hardware Detected' window does not appear shortly after inserting the CT2 adapter, the Xircom adapter has not been detected and the drivers will not be automatically installed.

Note: The adapter WILL NOT be detected if the adapter is not connected to an active port on the MAU.

If the drivers did not install please proceed with Step 8, otherwise, continue installation and reboot when prompted.

Note: If any other network adapters are installed, including Dial-up Adapter, you will NOT be prompted to reboot.

  9. From the desktop, double click the 'My Computer' icon, open the Control Panel and double click the 'Add New Hardware' icon. Click Next, choose NO Do not search for devices, and click Next again.

Select Network Adapter from the list then click Next.

Choose Have Disk and insert the Xircom driver disk or point to the proper location on the hard drive. From the Manufacturers list select Xircom and choose Xircom CreditCard TokenRing Adapter (All Types) from the Models list. Click OK, then click Next. Finish the installation as prompted.&

  10. If the CT2 adapter does not function correctly, check again for any yellow exclamation point (!) or red 'X' in the Device Manager for the network adapter.

If there is no entry for the network adapter, there may be a resource conflict with other internal or external devices connected to the computer. There may also be an unreported conflict with the PCMCIA slots of the computer.

Troubleshooting Network Connectivity

If the adapter software installs but you cannot gain access to your network or a yellow exclamation point (!) or red 'X' is displayed over the Network adapter icon in the Device Manager, please do the following:

  1. Double click the Network Adapters entry, select the Xircom CreditCard Token-Ring adapter entry and click Properties.

  2. Choose the Resources tab and remove the check mark from the 'Use Automatic Settings' box.

  3. Locate the memory range listings in the 'Resource Settings' box. Click on the words 'Memory Range' and then click the 'Change Settings' button.

  4. Using the up or down arrow change the memory range to the first available memory range between 000D1000 - 000D8FFF. Take note of the 'Conflict Information' box, verify that there are no conflicting devices listed. If there are, continue clicking the appropriate arrow in the 'Memory Value' box until you locate a range that is not in use by another device.

Click OK. Windows 95 will read the changes, rebuild the driver information list and activate the new settings. When Windows* 95 activates the new settings, you should hear a two-tone sound indicating the adapter has been recognized and initialized.

If the adapter does not initialize, repeat steps 1 through 5 changing the interrupt value instead of the memory address, and also verify with your Network Administrator that the proper client and protocol information has been correctly entered in the network configuration window (Control Panel, Network icon).

If the steps in this document have not resolved your configuration issues then it may be necessary to contact Technical Support for assistance.
