Enhanced Intel® Speedstep Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology

A. Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency, which results in decreased power consumption, which results in decreased heat production, which in turn allows improved acoustics because fans do not need to spin as quickly.

Q. Which Intel® processors support Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology

A. Intel® Xeon® processors with the 800MHz front side bus. Not all Intel® Xeon® processors support Enhanced SpeedStep Technology. Refer to the 64-Bit Intel® Xeon® Processor with 800 MHz System Bus (1MB and 2MB L2 Cache Versions) Specification Update for more information.

Q. Is Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology compatible with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology?

A. Yes. The operating system sees two virtual processors. Requests to change the power state are prioritized between each virtual processor by the BIOS and the operating system; the power state will default to that of the virtual processor requesting the highest state.

Q. What are the system requirements to support Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology?

A. Systems supporting Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology require a compatible BIOS, a compatible operating system, and a compatible Intel processor.
