Mobile processor upgrade information

Before purchasing a mobile processor to upgrade your system, contact your system manufacturer.

Caution
  • Only your system manufacturer is familiar with your system specifications and the processors it supports.
  • Work with your system manufacturer to validate that your system supports a processor upgrade and that the upgrade does not violate your warranty terms and conditions.
  • Lack of BIOS support for your processor can cause the system to not boot or exhibit erratic behavior.

One thing to note is that older motherboards frequently do not have BIOS support for newer processors.

  • Processor upgrade and BIOS update information is specific to the system motherboard and must come from the system manufacturer.
  • Even if your processor and motherboard sockets match, it is critical to make sure that your system BIOS supports the new processor.

Replacing a mobile processor can be difficult because the form factor is much smaller compared to a desktop system. Some things to be aware of are shown below.

  • Before upgrading, find out which processor package type you have:
    • For all FC-BGA processor package types, the processor is soldered down on the motherboard.
    • Installation is easier for FC-PGA package types since they are socketed processors.
  • The upgrade can require removal of key system components to get to the processor, depending on how the manufacturer designed the system.

A final consideration is that faster processors and processors with more cores can affect the temperature of your system. Before purchasing your processor, make sure your system chassis and existing thermal solution works with your laptop from a thermal perspective.
