The 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processors and 3rd generation Intel® Core™ processors use the same LGA1155 socket, providing for the most part, backward and forward compatibility.
The most recent desktop boards based on the Intel® 6 Series Chipset include an updated BIOS and firmware. But, many Intel® 6 Series Chipset Boards require BIOS, ME8, and driver updates in order to support 3rd generation Intel Core processors. Check with the board manufacturer, before the update, to verify your board supports the upgrade.
| Note |
For desktop boards based on the Intel® Q67, Q65, or B65 chipset, upgrading to a 3rd generation Intel Core processor is not possible. | |
