Information needed for warranty processing

Prior to contacting Intel for warranty support please make sure you have completed the following steps and gathered the necessary product information. Following these steps will allow us to handle your warranty request as quickly as possible.

  1. Perform the proper troubleshooting steps to correctly identify the processor as the failing component. Computers are complex systems and it is easy to incorrectly identify the cause of many problems.

  2. If the troubleshooting results indicate that your processor is at fault, make sure that your processor is still under warranty and that Intel is the correct source for warranty support.
    Intel sells processors via Retail and Wholesale channels. Retail processors are sold in clearly marked individual boxes and typically carry a 3-year warranty directly from Intel. Wholesale (a.k.a. tray or OEM) processors are not sold in retail boxes and are typically pre-installed by a system manufacturer (ex. HP*, Dell*, Gateway*) or reseller. Intel does not provide direct warranty support for wholesale processors.

    If your processor was sold through a wholesale channel you must contact your system manufacturer or reseller for warranty support. Additional information on Intel's warranty policies can be found at http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sb/cs-020033.htm

    If you are not sure whether to contact your reseller or Intel, obtain the processor (see below) and contact Intel. We will be able to determine the proper source for warranty support.


  3. If your processor qualifies for warranty support direct from Intel, you will need to provide the following information:
  • All the markings from the top of the defective processor. See the information below regarding processor markings.


Please have the above information ready before contacting Intel.

Note Please be prepared to provide proof-of-purchase as Intel may request this before processing a warranty request.

Processor Markings

Processor Markings:
Please record the information from lines 1 - 6 (see figure 1 or 2 below).

Note You must get these markings from the physical processor. The markings on the box label are not sufficient.


Figure 1 below details the general markings used for most current Intel® processors. Figure 2 shows the markings for older processors. The location of certain markings (ex. Processor #) will vary based on the type of processor you have.
