BIOS Upgrade Considerations for Pentium® Pro Processor-Based PCs

This document is written for professional system integrators building PCs from industry-accepted motherboards, chassis, and peripherals. It summarizes BIOS upgrade information needed to successfully integrate Pentium® Pro processor-based PCs. The information in this document applies to PCs assembled using Boxed Pentium Pro processors. The term "Boxed Pentium Pro processors" refers to processors packaged for use by system integrators.

BIOS code on Pentium Pro processor-based motherboards contains data that is specific to a processor silicon stepping. Integrators must ensure that this BIOS stepping data matches the processor stepping used. When the BIOS stepping data doesn't match the processor stepping, integrators must upgrade the data in the BIOS before shipping the system.

Motherboard vendors can supply information about the default stepping of the Pentium Pro processor supported by the BIOS on a specific motherboard. If the default stepping data does not match the processor stepping used, the motherboard vendor can supply a system BIOS upgrade for the motherboard.

This applies to:
Intel® Pentium® Pro Processors
