PortStation Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When I run the PortStation setup program why doesn't the USBLPT1 appear on the list of available ports in the Add Printer Wizard?

A. The BIOS configuration is incorrect. In the machine's BIOS, set the Plug and Play OS setting to "off" or "no". On Toshiba* computers, set the Device Configuration to "Setup by OS". Also, make sure that USB is enabled. If your computer does not have one of these configuration choices, verify that the BIOS revision is the latest available for your computer and upgrade if possible.

Q. Why doesn't my USB printer, or other USB device, work when plugged into the 4-Port or 7-Port hub?

A. Non-Xircom USB devices are not supported by the PortStation using NT4. If the USB printer has a driver that supports NT4, then the device may function with the PortStation. Most USB devices will not have drivers for NT*. If no driver exists, the device will not work.

Q. Why doesn't my USB keyboard function when plugged into the PortStation hub under Windows NT* - it functions with NT when I connect it directly to the USB port?

A. USB keyboards are supported at the BIOS level when connected directly to the Root hub. USB branches below the Root hub are not supported at the BIOS level. Device drivers are required.

Q. How many PortStation modules can be connected between the endcaps?

A. A maximum of six modules can be connected between the endcaps.

Q. What do the green and amber colored lights on the endcaps indicate?

A. Amber colored lights on the endcaps indicate that the PortStation is not getting enough power to enable all of the devices attached. Plug in the supplied AC power adapter. Once the PortStation is using AC power, the endcap lights will turn green, which indicates that it has enough power.

Q. Can two or more modules of the same type be used together?

A. Up to six of the same type modules can be used together.

Q. Can one PortStation be connected to two computers at the same time?

A. No. A USB device can have only one Host Controller (computer) connected at a time.

Q. Can more than one PortStation be connected to a single computer at the same time?

A. Yes. Multiple PortStations can be connected to one computer by utilizing the 4-Port, or 7-Port USB hub modules. The 1.x USB specification limits the number of devices to 127 in a maximum of four tiers.

Q. Can a mouse or other low-speed serial device be used with the PortStation serial module?

A. No. The serial module does not support low-speed devices at this time.

Q. Can a Handheld device (like REX*, Casio*, Palm Pilot*,  Handheld PC*,  etc.) be synchronized with a computer using the PortStation serial module (STDB92)?

A. Yes. However, if the PortStation STDB92 was installed after the synchronization software, you must run the software configuration program and select the appropriate PortStation communication port. If that doesn't fix it, uninstall the STDB92 using the README.TXT, uninstall the sync software, reinstall the STDB92, make sure it installs on COM4 or below Then, reinstall the sync software and configure it for the correct port.

Q. Why doesn't my STDB92 work on COM5 or above under Windows* 95/98?

A. Some serial devices (like the STDB92) are not able to access ports above COM4 due to software limitations. You must move your STDB92 to COM4 or below.

Q. Can a Zip drive be attached to the PortStation parallel port module?

A. No. The parallel port module only supports printers.

Q. Can multi-function printers be used with the PortStation parallel port module?

A. No. Only printers that can operate with a disabled bi-directional mode work with the parallel port module.

Q. Can I hot-swap PortStation modules?

A. While the PortStation modules can be hot-swapped if the operating system supports it, Xircom® recommends that the USB cable and the AC power adapter be disconnected from the PortStation before adding or removing modules.

Q. Can Ethernet 10Base2 (coaxial) connections be used with the PortStation Ethernet module?

A. No. The PortStation supports only 10BaseT (twisted pair) connections.

Q. Why does a replacement PortStation Ethernet module install as a new adapter instead of using the configuration from the original module?

A. Every Ethernet adapter must have a unique network address, which is supplied by the manufacturer. This address causes each USB Ethernet adapter to be identified as a different device by the USB Host Controller. This is in accordance with USB specifications.

Q. Can the PortStation be used as an Ethernet hub if multiple Ethernet modules are installed?

A. No. The PortStation will not function as an Ethernet hub.

Q. Can a laptop computer with an Ethernet PC Card be connected to a PortStation Ethernet module installed on another computer?

A.They cannot be connected directly using one cable. An Ethernet hub must be used with a separate cable connecting the hub to each Ethernet adapter.

Q. Does a USB mouse function using NT4* when connected to the PortStation 4-Port USB hub?

A. Only Xircom USB devices are supported with NT4. Some third party devices may function if the manufacturer supplies drivers for NT4.
