Serial Port Frequently Asked Questions
Q.
Does my system support USB?
PC: USB is supported in
Windows* 98, Windows* Me and Windows* 2000. USB is not
supported in NT4. USB is only supported in Windows* 95 if you
are running at least version 4.00.950B, and have installed the
Windows 95 USB Supplement available from Microsoft. If you don't
have USB sockets on your PC, try our 2 Port or 4 Port PortGear PCI
to USB Upgrade Card.
Mac: All iMacs are USB Ready. For G3(other than Beige) you need to run Mac OS 8.6 (or better) and USB Extensions 1.2 (or better). If you have a Beige G3 you can run Mac OS 8.5 with USB Extensions 1.2, but we recommend OS 8.6 (or better) and USB Extensions 1.41 (or better).
Q. How do I check the installation status?
- Go into Device Manager and look
under ports for the USB Serial port number .
- If you do not see any USB ports try
completely uninstalling from the Add/Remove Programs Menu
(under Control Panel).
- If, after you reinstall you are still having this problem it
may be a Windows* registry issue.
Q. Not functioning after restart?
Upgrade to the newest drivers to resolve this issue.
Q. How do I download a driver?
Double Click
on the driver. A dialogue box will appear. The box
will ask you what to do with this file. Please select the place to
save the file on your disk. When the file have downloaded, go to the
file and double click. In the dialog that opens, please type or select where you want to copy the install files to.
Note: We recommend that the destination drive be the A: with a new diskette.
Once you have selected the destination, please select Unzip on the right side. The files will self-extract to the destination drive (i.e., A:). Once the download is complete, a box will appear telling you the number of files that were self-extracted successfully. Follow the instructions in the manual to install the driver.
Q.
It has been reported that the USB ports on the Sony Vaio machines
are unreliable?
Actually this is a feature of the Vaio.
Only 2 of the three USB port can be active at one time.
In particular, if the two ports on the PC are
in use the front one becomes disabled if (say) the USB floppy is
inserted into the port expander USB port. Therefore, we
recommend not using the USB port on the Vaio port extender
module.
