Installation Instructions for XircomŪ PortGear USB to Serial Ports

Installation Instructions for Xircom® PortGear USB to Serial Ports in Windows* 95 OSR2, Windows* 98, Windows* 98 SE, Windows* Me and Windows* 2000

Before proceeding, please download the latest drivers.


Section I - Windows* 95 OSR2.1 with USB Supplement

If you are using Windows 95 (OSR2.1) version 4.00.950B or later and have already installed the USB Supplement, Windows will automatically detect the PortGear USB to Serial converter when it is connected to your computer. The Update Device Driver Wizard will indicate that it has found an "Unknown Device." A window will automatically appear "New Hardware Found". Proceed with the following:

  1. Select Other Location and type or browse to the folder you extracted the file (by default, C:\Xircom\PortGear\PGWINxx where xx is either 95, 98 or 2K).
  2. Click Next, then click Finish.
  3. When prompted, browse to the same folder in Step 1.
  4. Click OK to continue.
  5. The "Found New Hardware" Wizard will appear for an "Unknown device".
  6. Repeat Steps 1-4.

Section II - Windows* 98 and Windows* 98 SE

Windows will automatically detect the PortGear USB to Serial Converter when it is connected to your computer. The "Found New Hardware" message will appear, followed by the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog. Click Next. On the "Install Hardware Device Drivers" screen, the PortGear USB to Serial Converter will be identified as "USB Device". Proceed with the following:
  1. Click Next.
  2. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended) and click Next.
  3. On the Locate Driver Files screen, select Specify a Location and uncheck Floppy Disk Drivers and CD-ROM and type or browse to the folder you extracted the file (by default, C:\Xircom\PortGear\PGWINxx where xx is either 95, 98 or 2K) then click OK. If prompted for additional Windows files, insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM and click Next or browse to the folder containing the Windows 98 CAB files (by default C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS).
  4. In response to the message "Insert the manufacturer's installation disk...," browse to the same folder in Step 3.
  5. On the Driver Files Search Results screen, click Next again to install the driver displayed.
  6. Click Finish on the next screen.
  7. The "Found New Hardware" Wizard will appear for device "PGSDB9".

Repeat Steps 1-7.

Once the files have finished copying, the device will be ready for use.



Section III - Windows* 2000

Windows will automatically detect the PortGear USB to Serial Converter when it is connected to your computer. The "Found New Hardware" message will appear, followed by the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog. Click Next. On the "Install Hardware Device Drivers" screen, the PortGear USB to Serial Converter will be identified as "USB Device". Proceed with the following:

  1. Click Next.
  2. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended) and click Next.
  3. On the Locate Driver Files screen, select Specify a Location and uncheck Floppy Disk Drivers and CD-ROM and type or browse to the folder you extracted the file (by default, C:\Xircom\PortGear\PGWINxx where xx is either 95, 98 or 2K).
  4. In response to the message "Insert the manufacturer's installation disk...," browse to the same folder in Step 3 then click OK. If prompted for additional Windows files, insert your Windows 2000 CD-ROM and click Next or browse to the folder containing the Windows* 2000 i386 files.
  5. On the Driver Files Search Results screen, click Next again to install the driver displayed.
  6. Click Finish on the next screen.
  7. The "Found New Hardware" Wizard will appear for device "PGSDB9".

    Repeat Steps 1-7. Once the files have finished copying, the device will be ready for use.


Section IV - Windows* Me

Initially the Xircom PortGear Serial Adapter was not supported under Windows Me. Due to customer demand for support under this operating system, functionality is supplied through the Windows 98 driver set. Please follow the installation steps listed below.

  1. Upon insertion of the Xircom PortGear USB Serial Adapter the "Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear.
  2. Choose to "Specify the location of the driver (Advanced)". Click "Next".
  3. Remove selection for "Removable Media (Floppy, CD-ROM..) and choose to "Specify a location".
  4. Click "Browse" and point to the folder where you extracted the files (by default, C:\Xircom\PortGear\PGWIN98) then click OK
  5. Click "Next".
  6. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" should display it is ready to install the driver for the PortGear USB Serial Adapter. The path you browsed to should be displayed with the file Etisere.inf shown. Click "Next".
  7. After installation select "Finish".
  8. If prompted to restart your computer select "Yes".

    Again, you must download and use the Windows 98 driver to install your PortGear USB to Serial converter in Windows Me.

XircomŪ PortGear USB To 9 pin Serial Converter (PGSDB9, U1-S9)
