Troubleshooting Tips for Xircom(R) PortGear USBnet Network Adapter

Solution:
Below are steps for troubleshooting network connection problems with the Xircom® PortGear USBnet Network Adapter (PGUNET or U1-U1):

1.If you cannot see other computers in the "Network Neighborhood"...

Be sure the cable is securely plugged in on both ends
Try plugging in the cable(s) and shutting down and then restarting the computers
Be sure the software is installed on ALL computers on the USBnet Network
Be sure that all computers on the USBnet Network have the same protocol installed and bound to "PortGear USB to USB Adapter"
Disable "sleep" or "power saver" modes on all computers
Run USBView utility to verify connections.
If you can see other computer(s) on the USBnet Network but can't access their files or printer:

Be sure sharing is enabled on all computers.
Be sure that all computers on the USBnet Network have the same protocol installed and bound to "PortGear USB to USB Adapter".

2.If you can access other computer's resources but cannot connect to a local multi-player game server...

Be sure to follow your game's instructions for connecting over a Local Area Network (LAN)
Be sure that all computers on the USBnet Network have the proper protocol (see your game's documentation for a list of supported protocols) installed and bound to the "PortGear USB to USB Adapter"
Disable "sleep" or "power saver" modes on all computers
If your game uses the IPX protocol and you have a physical Network Interface Card installed, un-bind IPX from your physical Network Interface Card
If your game uses the TCP/IP protocol, be sure to assign a static IP addresses to each computer.

3.To check the installation in Windows...

On the desktop right click "My Computer."

Go to the bottom and click on properties. Go into Device Manager.

Select Network Adapters.

Look for "PortGear USB to USB Adapter".

If the "PortGear USB to USB Adapter" is highlighted with yellow exclamation point, the drivers are not loaded correctly.

Insert the PortGear CD-ROM into the CD-ROM.

Run SETUP.EXE in the root directory of the CD-ROM to load the menu program. Choose "Install PortGear USB to USB Software".

4.If the installation was not successful...

If the software installation process was not successful you may need to overwrite the previous installation, to do this follow the steps below:

From the Start menu, select Settings/Control Panel to display the Windows Control Panel.

Double click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon.

In the "Install/Uninstall" property page, select "Xircom USBNet". Click Add/Remove.

Click Uninstall when prompted.

Reinstall the device.

Click to go to the PGUNET home page
