Symptom(s): Unable to install the Xircom® PortGear USB to Ethernet Adapter
Solution: To install the Xircom® PortGear USB to Ethernet Adapter (PGENET10 or U1-E45) hardware and software: Plug the RJ-45 connector on the network cable into the RJ-45 connector on the PGENET10. Connect the other end of the RJ-45 cable to the network. Plug the PGENET10 USB connector into the USB port on your computer, or into a separate USB hub.
Proceed to the software installation instructions for your Operating System:
Windows* 2000: Windows will automatically detect the PGENET10 when it is connected to your computer. The "Found New Hardware" message will appear, followed by the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog. Click Next. On the "Install Hardware Device Drivers" screen. Proceed with the following steps: 1.Click Next. 2.Insert the PortGear CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 3.Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended) and click Next. 4.On the Locate Driver Files screen, select the Specify a location and uncheck Floppy Disk Drives and CD-ROM Drives. 5.Click Next. 6.In response to the message "Insert the manufacturer's installation disk...," insert the PortGear CD-ROM and type or browse to the \WIN2000 folder on the PortGear CD-ROM (for example, if your CD-ROM drive is E, type E:\WIN2000), and then click OK. If prompted for additional Windows files, insert your Windows 2000 CD-ROM and click Next. 7.On the Driver Files Search Results screen, click Next again to install the driver displayed. 8.Click Finish on the next screen. 9.Restart the computer if prompted.
Windows* 98 and Windows* ME: Windows will automatically detect the PGENET10 when it is connected to your computer. The Add New Hardware Wizard will indicate that it has found "PGENET10". To continue, do the following: 1.Click Next. 2.Insert the PortGear CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 3.Select Search For Best Driver and click Next. 4.Select Specify A Location and type or browse to the \WIN98 folder on the PortGear CD-ROM (for example, if your CD-ROM drive is E, type E:\WIN98). Uncheck Floppy Disk and CD-ROM drive, then click Next. If prompted for additional Windows files, insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM and click Next. 5.Click Finish. 6.Restart the computer if prompted. Log on to the network.
Windows* 95 (OSR2) with USB Supplement: If you are using Windows* 95 (OSR2) version 4.00.950B or later and have already installed the USB Supplement, Windows will automatically detect the PGENET10 when it is connected to your computer. The Update Device Driver Wizard will indicate that it has found an "Unknown Device." To continue, do the following: 1.Insert the PortGear CD-ROM drive and click Next. 2.Select Other Location and type or browse to the \WIN95 folder on the PortGear CD-ROM (for example, if your CD-ROM drive is E, type E:\WIN95). 3.Click Next, then click Finish. 4.Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 5.Double-click the Network icon. 6.On the Configuration tab, click Add. 7.Select Adapter, and then click Add. 8.Select Xircom, select PortGear Ethernet Adapter, and then click OK. 9.Click OK to restart your computer (required to activate the network connection). 10.Log on to the network.
Windows NT* 4.0 (Service Pack 3 or higher is required): 1.Insert the PortGear CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and click EXIT. 2.Right click on "My Computer" and click EXPLORE. 3.Double-click on the drive that contains the PortGear CD, i.e., D:\PortGear..., or E:\PortGear.... 4.Double-click on SETUPNT4.EXE on the PortGear CD to install USB support for NT and click Finish to restart the computer. 5.Right click on "Network Neighborhood" and click on "Properties". 6.Click on "Adapters" tab and click "ADD" to install the PGENET10 adapter. 7.Click "Have Disk", type in the path of the PortGear CD, i.e., D:\ or E:\, and click OK. 8."Xircom USB Adapter" is listed, continue the installation, configure TCP/IP settings for the "Xircom USB Adapter", click "Apply" and restart the computer after installation is finished. 9.LED will light up upon the next bootup.
