The GSM phone is attached to the Xircom® CompactCard Modem 56 Global Access with a Xircom GSM Connection Kit.

To make an outgoing call, you need to configure the connection first. Follow the steps below:
- With the modem inserted into the Pocket PC, select "Start" --> "Settings" --> "Connections," and then select "Modem" icon.
- The Modem Connections screen will appear. Select "New Connection..."
- In the Make New Connection window, enter a name for the connection and select the Xircom modem.
- Select "Advanced..." and enter any additional information you may need for the connection on the TCP/IP tab and Name Servers tab.
Note: Consult with you ISP or network administrator for this information. In most cases you may not need to configure this. Click "OK" to exit.
- On the Make New Connection screen, click "Next," enter the phone number that you would like to dial, and then click "Next."
- Uncheck the "Wait for dial tone before dialing" box, click "Finish."
Now that the dial-up connection has been configured, place the outgoing call. Follow the steps below:
- Connect the GSM Connection Kit to the modem and the GSM cellular phone.
Note: Make sure the phone is receiving a data signal. You may have to contact you cellular phone provider to enable data services for the phone. A "D" or equivalent may appear on the display of the phone. Make sure the signal strength is sufficient and that the phone has enough battery power for your call.
- To place the call, select "Start" --> "Programs," and then click the "Connection" icon.
- On the Connections window, click the icon with the name you gave your modem connection in Step #2 above.
- The Connect To window will appear. Enter your User name and Password.
Note: If you are dialing from home and do not need to use a "9" to access an external office line, change the option in the "Dial from:" box to Home. If you phone system does require you to dial "9", leave the setting at Work.
- Click the "Connect" button. The status screen should report that the modem is dialing, authenticating and that it has connected.
