Xircom® PortStation Installation on Computers Running Windows* 98

  1. Plug in all hardware modules, devices, and cables.
  2. Insert the Xircom PortStation CD-ROM.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen for Windows* 98.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Configure devices in Windows as required (for example: Add Printer, Add Network Adapter)
Hardware and Software Requirements:

Windows* 98 or Windows* 98 Second Edition CD
  • A computer with USB version 1.0 support
  • A PortStation Starter Kit or End Cap Kit
  • Application software, cables and network connections required for use with an Ethernet adapter, a modem, a printer, serial port devices, or additional USB devices.

Follow these steps to install your first PortStation configuration. This procedure installs all the software required for the complete set of PortStation modules. Modules added after the initial installation do not require additional software installation.

  1. Using the DB-25 connectors provided, combine the PortStation Output Termination End Cap and up to 6 PortStation Modules and plug the set into the PortStation Input Termination End Cap.

  2. Connect AC power to the PortStation Output End Cap using the power module supplied (AC power may not be required for PortStation operation; this depends upon the types and combination of modules used).

  3. Plug the PortStation Input End Cap into the USB port on your computer, or into a separate USB hub, using the USB cable supplied. Windows 98 detects the new hardware and the "Add New Hardware Wizard" indicates that it has found a "Generic USB Hub " (this is the Windows description of the PortStation Input End Cap).

  4. Click Next.

  5. Click "Search for the best driver . . ." and click Next.

  6. Click "CD-ROM drive" and click Next. Accept the driver detected.

  7. Click Next and then click Finish.

  8. Windows detects the next PortStation Module in the connected set and the "Add New Hardware" Wizard reports an "Unknown Device."

  9. Click Next.

  10. Click "Search for the best driver . . ." and click Next.

  11. Click "CD-ROM drive" and click Next. Accept the driver detected.

  12. Once files have been copied and the Windows database updated, click Finish.

  13. Repeat steps for each additional PortStation.

  14. Configure any PortStation Modules requiring setup for use under Windows (printer, Ethernet adapter, modem, etc.). Use Windows Control Panel or appropriate application software.
