Issue
You are using a Serial Device (such as a REX) that requires COM ports 1-4 only, and your USB to Serial Converter loads as a COM5.
Solution
Follow these steps to use the Windows* Virtual Comport section to redirect your USB COM ports:
- Make sure that you have the latest PortGear USB to Serial drivers. You can download the latest drivers from our web site.
- On the desktop, right-click My Computer &rqauo; Properties and then click Device Manager.
- In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) next to Ports to expand the list of ports available on your computer.
- Double-click the USB Serial Port that you need to redirect. The following dialog box appears:
- Click the Port Assignments tab. The following dialog box appears:
- In Port Assignments, you can redirect your COM port in 2 ways.Change the COM port assignment to any available port.
- In the New port name drop down list, click your desired COM port, and then click OK.
Note: Your desired COM port may not appear on the list. If this occurs, please go to Step B.
- Configure the Virtual COM Port assignments. In Port Assignments, click the Add button. The following dialog box appears:

- Locate the application file. The application file is an executable (.exe) file. In this example we used the REX 5000, and since TrueSync* Plus software is used with the REX 5000, we selected the TrueSync.exe file.
- Select the COM port (COM1-COM4) where you want to redirect the existing COM5 port. In this example, we selected COM4.
- Click OK two times. The next time you open the application file that you are using, the COM port you selected is opened.
- Congratulations! You have redirected your USB Serial COM ports. Change the COM port in your serial device to the COM port you selected in Step 8.
