FAQ for Xircom® PortStation USB Hub Modules

Q: Can I hot-swap Xircom® PortStation modules?
A: While the PortStation modules can be hot-swapped if the operating system supports it, Xircom recommends that the USB cable and the AC power adapter be disconnected from the PortStation before adding or removing modules.

Q: Can more than one PortStation be connected to a single computer at the same time?
A: Yes. Multiple PortStations can be connected to one computer by utilizing the USB ports on the End Cap, or the 4-Port or the 7-Port USB hub modules. The 1.x USB specification limits the number of devices to 127 in a maximum of four tiers.

Q: Can one PortStation be connected to two computers at the same time?
A: No. A USB device can have only one Host Controller (computer) connected at a time.

Q: Can two or more modules of the same type be used together?
A: Up to six of the same type modules can be used together.

Q: Does a USB mouse function using Windows NT* 4.0 when connected to the PortStation 4-Port USB hub?
A: Only Xircom USB devices are supported with NT* 4. Some third party devices may function if the manufacturer supplies drivers for NT 4.

Q: How many PortStation modules can be connected between the endcaps?
A: A maximum of six modules can be connected between the endcaps.

Q: Where can I get Windows* 95, Windows*  98, Windows  NT* and Windows* 2000 installation (driver) files?
A: Click one of these links to download the latest installation/driver files:

Q: Why doesn't my USB keyboard function when plugged into the PortStation hub under Windows NT - it functions with NT when I connect it directly to the USB port?
A: USB keyboards are supported at the BIOS level when connected directly to the Root hub. USB branches below the Root hub are not supported at the BIOS level. Device drivers are required.

Q: Why doesn't my USB printer or other USB device work under Windows NT 4.0 when plugged into the 4-Port or 7-Port hub?
A: Non-Xircom USB devices are not supported by the PortStation using NT4. If the USB printer has a driver that supports NT4, then the device may function with the PortStation. Most USB devices will not have drivers for NT. If no driver exists, the device will not work.
