What is a codec? Codec is a software plug-in component provided by various third-party vendors that enables Intel® Media Share Software and other applications on your computer to play specific media formats.
Codecs most often come pre-installed by the system manufacturer. If a song or video needs a codec that is missing on your system, you may be prompted to install the required codec.
Codecs are available through a number of sources. If you need a codec, check with the media vendor and the notebook manufacturer first. Codecs also may be available on the Internet.
What codecs are required by Intel Media Share Software? WMV and WMA codecs are required. These codecs are commonly installed by the notebook manufacturer. See Using codecs* for information on downloading these codecs.
DivX codecs are not required but are supported and available at DivX.com*.
