You do not need Intel® Viiv™ Media Server to use Intel® Media Share Software; however, the software is optimized to work with Intel Viiv Media Server.

What is Intel Viiv Media Server?

The Intel® Viiv™ Media Server distributes personal media and content from online services and the user interface of applications to other Intel® Viiv™ technology verified devices throughout the home network.

Note: The Intel Viiv Media Server does not move or copy any media. It only reads the media in the identified folders and catalogues it for access throughout the home network.

What is a media server?

A media server is a software service that allows you to discover, browse and access personal media (pictures, music, and videos) stored on a computer with other devices connected to the home network. For example, the Intel® Viiv™ Media Server allows you to share your media that is stored on the Intel® Viiv™ technology-based PC with devices (such as your laptop) on the home network.

What media servers are verified to work with Intel® Media Share Software?

The following media servers are verified to work with Intel® Media Share Software:1

  • Intel® Viiv™ Media Server (Intel Viiv software version 1.5 or higher)
  • Digion Dixim Media Server 1.2.36 (available through system manufacturer only)
  • Microsoft Windows Media Connect 2.0*
  • MusicMatch 10*

What do I need to share media stored on a networked PC with Intel Media Share Software?

To share media stored on a networked PC with Intel® Media Share Software, you need the following:

On the networked PC:

  • Access to the home network
  • Media server installed and running
  • Shared folders containing digital media
  • Firewall software listing media server as an exception

On the notebook:

  • Intel Media Share Software
  • Access to the home network
  • Approval for notebook to access media server content
  • Sufficient hard drive space (500 MB minimum)
  • Firewall software lists media server as an exception

How do I access the Intel® Viiv™ Media Server?

To share media stored on the Intel® Viiv™ technology-based PC, the notebook needs access to the Intel® Viiv™ Media Server.

On the Intel Viiv technology-based PC, open the Intel® Viiv™ software and complete the following steps:

  1. Select view network map.
  2. Select the Intel® Centrino® notebook (look for the system name) and click next.
  3. If the system has not been approved, select approved and click next.
    If the system is approved, select next.
  4. Select a device type, if needed, and click next.
  5. Select yes to give the device access to the Intel Viiv Media Server.

Now, on the notebook, verify you can connect to the Intel Viiv Media Server in Intel® Media Share Software.

How do I tell if my notebook has access to the Intel Viiv Media Server?

From the Intel® Centrino® notebook:
Click the Intel® Media Share Monitor on the Microsoft* Windows Vista* taskbar to see available media servers. If you have access to the Intel® Viiv™ Media Server, it is listed as Intel Media Server (COMPUTER NAME).

From the Intel® Viiv™ technology-based PC:
In the Intel® Viiv™ software, complete the following steps to check if a device has access to the Intel Viiv Media Server:

  1. Select view network map.
  2. Click the device icon.
  3. In the access to Intel® Viiv™ Media Server: field, verify yes.
