During the installation, Windows* NT 4.0 will attempt to choose the best settings for the adapter. However, Windows* NT 4.0 does not support plug-n-play, and different situations may keep the adapter from initializing properly after installation. The following is a short section of troubleshooting suggestions that may correct some of these issues. This troubleshooting section should not be considered an exhaustive reference. Please contact Xircom if you are unable to resolve the difficulty.
Issue:
After I installed the adapter and re-booted Windows* NT 4.0, I received a Service Control message reporting that a service or driver did not start.
Investigation:
You can use the Event Viewer to read the error message by performing the following steps:
- Click "Start" --> "Programs" --> Administrative Tools --> Event Viewer. The Event Viewer will list any errors the system encountered during the boot-up process.

- Double-click the bottom error message to start reviewing. (The errors are read from bottom to top.)

Error messages reporting that the driver failed to start because a device attached to the system is not functioning may be caused by different situations. This error may sometimes be displayed if you have installed another adapter that is not connected to the machine at boot up. It can also be displayed if two different devices are attempting to use the same resources. The solution is to adjust the listed adapter's configuration settings.
To verify the adapter hardware is functioning properly, run the Diagnostic Utility (found on the Diagnostics Diskette) by doing the following:
- Exit Windows* NT 4.0 and reboot the computer. Choose the MS-DOS selection in the boot up screen.

- Verify that CTENABL.DOS (Xircom Card Enabler) is loaded properly. CTENABL.DOS will only load properly from within a CONFIG.SYS file.

Refer to Section 4 of the CTM-33 User's Guide for details. Creation of a DOS boot diskette may be required.

- From the DOS prompt, insert the Xircom Diagnostics Disk into the computer's floppy-disk drive. To begin the adapter test, type "javascript:void(null);" and then press "Enter."
- If the adapter passes all diagnostic tests it should function properly within Windows* NT 4.0. Most difficulties with Windows* NT 4.0 may be corrected by adjusting the adapter settings as described later in this section.
- If the diagnostic utility fails to load or fails some of the tests, there may be a hardware malfunction within the adapter or computer. Please contact Xircom. (Technical Support contact information is listed at the end of this document.)
If the adapter passes all diagnostic tests, but fails to initialize within Windows* NT 4.0 you may be able to correct this by adjusting the adapter resource settings.
First, verify which resource settings the computer is presently utilizing:
- Click "START" button, open the "Programs" menu item, drag over and down to the "Administrative Tools."

- Click "Windows NT Diagnostics," and then click the "Resources" tab.

Clicking the different buttons at the bottom of the Diagnostics window (IRQ, I/O PORT, DMA, MEMORY, and DEVICES) will show you the settings being used for each selection.

After choosing settings that are not being used, modify the adapter settings by performing the following steps:
- Reboot Windows* NT 4.0 and open the Control Panel.

- From the Control Panel, double-click the "Network" icon, and then select the "Adapters" tab.

- Click the adapter listing you are using, click the "Properties" button, and then click the "PC Card" button.

- Change the memory address to another setting (D4000, D8000, C8000, CC000 or another that is not currently in use by NT).

- Click "OK"in the adapter configuration window, and then click the "Close" button in the Network window.

- Windows* NT will prompt to restart. Click "Yes."

These steps may also be used to modify the interrupt, port, and other settings that the adapter driver offers.
Issue:
The adapter initializes fine after the installation, but some other hardware device functions sporadically, or the computer hangs or locks up.
Probable Cause:
Windows* NT may have assigned a resource to the Xircom adapter that is conflicting with another hardware device.
Possible Solution:
Eject the adapter from the computer. This should free the conflicting resource to allow you to change the resource settings for the CTM-33 adapter from the Control Panel / Network screen to correct the issue. For further information on adjusting hardware device resource settings, please review your Microsoft Windows* NT 4.0 documentation.
Issue:
I installed the adapter and can see all other Microsoft computers on the network, but cannot see the Novell Netware Server.
Possible Solution:
Windows* NT 4.0 does not install the Novell NetWare client automatically. Manually verify that the NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport is installed and install the Client Service for NetWare client by performing the following steps:
- Open the "Control Panel" and double click the "Network" icon.

- Select the "Protocols" tab and verify that NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport is loaded.

If it is present, go to step 3.

If it is not, install the protocol
- Click "Add."
- Highlight the 'NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport and click "OK." Windows* NT 4.0 will prompt for the installation diskettes.
- Insert the appropriate diskettes as requested, and then click "OK." This will install the protocol. Windows* NT 4.0 will need to restart to activate the protocol.

Next, from the Network window, select the "Services" tab.

If the Client Service for NetWare is not installed,
- Click the "Add" button.
- Highlight the NetWare client and click "OK." Windows* NT 4.0 will prompt for the installation diskettes.
- Insert the appropriate diskettes as requested by clicking the 'OK' button. This will install the Netware client. Windows* NT 4.0 will need to restart to activate the protocol.

Once you reboot and log into NT 4.0, you should see the NetWare login window.

If you are using a Novell 3.x server click the Preferred Server button, enter the name of the server and click "OK."

If you are using a Novell 4.x server, click the "Default Tree and Context" button, type in the tree and context names, and the click "OK."
If your Windows* and Novell* passwords are different you will be presented with a password dialog box and will need to enter the correct password to log into the Novell server.
