    Xircom Drivers

The Xircom drivers are located on the Xircom Driver CD that comes with the Xircom card. However, drivers are updated from time to time to resolve issues and provide enhancements. We recommend that you download the latest driver set from our Web site and use that to install your Xircom card. The instructions in this document request that you point to the Xircom CD for the Xircom drivers. In order to use the downloaded driver files, point to the extracted Xircom files instead of the Xircom CD.

This section will assist with the installation of the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 Adapter and RealPort Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56. It is divided into two subsections.

    Pre-Installation Instructions

The following steps should be performed prior to inserting the CEM56-100/REM56G-100 into the computer's PC Card slot.
  • Check for Real Mode Memory Managers.
    1. Open the System Editor (Start, Run, type SYSEDIT, and click OK ).
    2. Select the CONFIG.SYS file either by clicking on the CONFIG.SYS title bar or by selecting Window (on Toolbar) and then selecting CONFIG.SYS from the displayed list.
    3. Select Search from the Toolbar, click Find and type EMM386 in the dialog box, click Find Now . If found, change the EMM386 line to read as follows:

      -- DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
    4. Select the SYSTEM.INI file either by clicking on the SYSTEM.INI Title Bar or by selecting Window from the Toolbar and selecting SYSTEM.INI from the displayed list.
    5. Select Search from the Toolbar, click Find and type EMMEXECLUDE in the dialog box and click Find Now . If found modify the line to read as follows:

      -- SYSTEM.INI:
      -- [386Enh]
      -- EMMEXCLUDE=C000-CFFF (use C000-CBFF on Cardbus computers)
    6. Save all files and exit the System Editor.
    Installation Instructions

All necessary Xircom files are located on the root of the Xircom CD that came with the product. The Windows 95 OSR2 source files, which are required during the installation, are typically located on the local hard drive in the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS directory. These files can also be found in the WIN95 directory on the Windows 95 OSR2 CD-ROM.
    1. Start the computer WITHOUT the CEM56-100/REM56G-100 adapter inserted. Allow Windows 95 OSR2 to boot fully.
    2. Place the Xircom CD into the CD-ROM drive or be sure that you know the full path to the directory where the CEM56-100/REM56G-100 driver files are located on the hard drive.
    3. Insert the CEM56-100/REM56G-100 into the computer's PC Card slot. Windows will automatically detect the presence of the card and indicate that it has found new hardware by displaying a dialog box entitled "Update Device Driver Wizard ". Prior to displaying the dialog box, Windows 95 OSR2 may indicate that it is building a driver information database. If this process occurs, allow it to complete.
    4. The text in the dialog box should read "This wizard will complete the installation of: Xircom Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56". Windows may also detect the card as a Standard PCMCIA Modem. Click Next to continue.
    5. Windows 95 OSR2 will search the floppy drive for the card's driver. If the CEM56-100/REM56G-100 installation files are located in a directory on the hard drive, select the Other Location button and supply the path to this directory. If Windows still recognizes the card as a Standard PCMCIA Modem, make sure you are typing in the correct path to the driver files.
    6. Once Windows 95 OSR2 indicates that it has found the driver the "Xircom Multifunction CreditCard 10/100+Modem 56 Parent", click Finish .
    7. Windows 95 OSR2 should read the installation files and complete the installation of the CEM56-100/REM56G-100 adapter. During this process Windows 95 OSR2 may indicate that it is building a driver information database. It should also display successive "New Hardware Found" windows for each side of the adapter (Modem child device and Network child device). At any point during the process Windows 95 OSR2 may request additional files. If this occurs enter the path to the Windows 95 OSR2 source files. All files required for this installation reside in either the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS directory, the Windows 95 CD, or on the Xircom CEM56-100/REM56G-100 CD.
    8. When the installation process has completed go to the Windows 95 Device Manager to verify the installation. This can be reached by doing the following:

      - Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel .
      - Double-click the System icon in Control Panel .
      - In System Properties, select the Device Manager tab.

The CEM56-100/REM56G-100 card entries should be listed as follows:

      Modem:
-- Modem of Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 100+Modem 56

      Multifunction Adapters :
      -- Xircom Multifunction CreditCard 10/100+Modem 56 Parent

      Network adapters :
-- Network of Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56

Note: In some instances Windows 95 OSR2 may locate the Multifunction Parent Device as a second entry in the Modem group, instead of placing it in the Multi-function Adapters group, as follows:

      Modem:
-- Modem of Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 100+Modem 56
      -- Xircom Multifunction CreditCard 10/100+Modem 56 Parent

      Network adapters:
-- Network of Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56

In these cases there may be no Multi-function Adapters group listed. This is acceptable and will not affect the functionality of the adapter. The Multifunction Parent Device will behave exactly the same way regardless of the location of its entry in the Device Manager .
    9. Execute SETUP.EXE on the Xircom CD to install the Xircom Utilities program group on the system.

At the completion of the adapter installation, open the Control Panel and then double-click the Network icon. Review the clients and protocols displayed in the Network Properties box for applicability to your network. Add and configure network clients and protocols as required.
