Installation & Removal of CEM56-100/REM56G-100 With Microsoft*

The technical information below is valid for the following products:

- Xircom® Credit Card Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56
- Xircom® Real Port Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56


Windows NT* 4.0 Installation (if NT Networking is already installed)

Note: The instructions that follow assume that networking has already been installed on your NT system. If you have not yet configured NT for networking, see the section

Windows NT 4.0 Installation Including NT Networking Installation. The Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 supports manual installation under Microsoft* Windows NT* 4.0. Plug and Play* installation and hot swapping of adapters are not directly supported by Windows NT. For information on use of the Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 with third-party Card and Socket Services software such as Softex* or Card Executive*, see the README file.

Note: Turn off the computer before inserting the Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 PC Card.

Ethernet setup:
  1. With the computer powered OFF, connect cables and insert the Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 into the PC Card slot.
  2. Power up the computer with the Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 in the PC Card slot. Insert the Xircom installation CD, then click Start, click Settings, and select the Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Network icon. The Network Settings window opens.
  4. Click the Adapters tab. The Network Adapter window opens.
  5. Click Add. The Select Network Adapter window opens.
  6. Click Have Disk, type in the path to the Xircom CD-ROM.
  7. Click OK. The Select OEM Option window opens.
  8. Click OK . The Windows NT Setup window briefly displays.
  9. The Xircom Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 Settings window opens, displaying the default settings. In most circumstances, the default settings will properly operate the adapter. However, consult the README.TXT file on the Xircom CD-ROM for the latest recommendations.
  10. Click OK. The Network Settings window redisplays.
  11. Click Close. If any dialog boxes appear related to setting up network protocols, contact your Network Administrator for configuration assistance. If you have already performed this configuration, click Cancel.
  12. When the Network Settings Change window opens, click Yes to restart the computer.
Modem Setup:
  1. After the computer has been restarted, select Modems from the Control Panel.
  2. At the Install New Modem screen make sure that the "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list checkbox" is NOT checked. Click Next. NT will query the COM ports looking for the Xircom modem. Once the Xircom modem is found, click Next. If a Standard Modem is found, click Change. On the next screen, click Have disk. With [path to CD-ROM] selected, click OK.
  3. At the Install New Modem screen click Finish.
  4. At the Modems Properties screen click Dialing Properties... to set up dialing properties (not necessary if a modem had been previously installed). Click Close .
  5. Run SETUP.EXE from the Xircom compact disc. Use Start, Run, and type the path to SETUP.EXE (for example, if your CD-ROM drive is E, type "E:\SETUP.EXE). Click the menu item "Install Software and Tools." Follow the onscreen instructions. Xircom utilities and online documentation will be copied to your hard drive and installed under Start, Programs, Xircom Utilities. You must have Microsoft* Internet Explorer* or Netscape* Navigator* installed to view the online documentation.
  6. To change the country configuration of your modem, run Country Select under Start, Programs, Xircom Utilities. Choose the country from which you will make modem calls, then click Save and Exit. 

Windows NT* 4.0 Installation (including installation of NT Networking)

Note: Use the instructions in this section if you have not yet installed networking on your NT system. If you have already installed NT networking, see Windows NT 4.0 Installation (with NT Networking Installed). The installation steps below use the NT 4.0 Network Installation Wizard to install Microsoft both Windows NT 4.0 networking and the Xircom Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 PC Card. You will need the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM and the Xircom installation CD for this installation.

Note: Turn off the computer before inserting the Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 PC Card.

  1. With the computer powered OFF, connect cables and insert the Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 into the PC Card slot.
  2. Power up the computer and allow Windows NT 4.0 to boot normally. Insert the Xircom installation CD, "then click Start, Settings, and select the Control Panel .
  3. From the Control Panel double-click the Network icon. A Windows NT message box will appear indicating that "Networking is not installed...". Click Yes to start the Network Installation wizard.
  4. Click the "Select from list..." button, then click the "Have Disk..." button.
  5. Type the drive letter for the CD-ROM (for example, D:\ ), then click OK.
  6. In the Select OEM Option box "Xircom Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56" appears highlighted. Click OK. The Network Adapters window will display "Xircom Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56" with a check mark next to it indicating that this is the active network adapter. Click Next.

    Note: Do not select "Manual Load."
  7. The Network Protocols window appears with the default (TCP/IP) protocol selected. Select the protocols (check with your network administrator) necessary to support your network environment, or use the defaults. These are easily changed later. Click Next to bring up the Network Services window.
  8. The Network Services window displays the default services installed by Windows NT. Check with your network administrator for a list of required services. Click Next to continue, click Next again to allow Windows NT to install the selected components.
    You will be required to first enter the path to NT source files (typically C:\i386 or the NT CD), and then to the Xircom installation CD.
  9. Enter the path to the NT source files, and click Next. When you are again prompted for the path, make sure the Xircom installation CD is in the drive, and enter the drive letter. Click Next.
  10. When all necessary files have been copied to the local drive, the Network Settings window will appear displaying the resources assigned to the adapter.

    Note: The presence of the Modem Settings does not mean that the modem is set up. The modem will be set up in steps 13 and following. The Power-Saving Options are:

    - Network & Modem
    - Network only
    - Modem only
    - Network & Modem is the default.
  11. Click Continue when you are satisfied with the assigned resources. Windows NT 4.0 will begin the software installation. Once the software is installed you are given the option to review all services, protocols, and adapters. You may enable or disable bindings for each. If you are satisfied with all selections click Next, then click Next again.
  12. The Identification dialog box should appear. Enter a unique computer name and select either Workgroup or Domain. Click Next. Click Finish, then Yes to restart your system.
Modem Setup:
  1. After the computer has been restarted, select Modems from the Control Panel.

Uninstalling under Windows NT* 4.0
  1. To uninstall modem functionality, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click the Modems icon. Select the Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 and click Remove. Click Yes, then click Close . Do not restart the computer.
  2. To uninstall network functionality, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click the Network icon. Select the Adapter tab and select the Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56, then click Remove. Click Yes, then click Close. Click No when asked if you wish to restart the computer.
  3. To uninstall the Xircom utilities, click Start, Programs, Xircom Utilities, Uninstall Xircom Utilities.
  4. Next, open the Registry Editor (Start, Run, type REGEDT32, click OK). Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine page.  Remove the following registry keys:

    -HKLM\HARDWARE\RESOURCEMAP\OtherDrivers\CEM56, CEM56N4 and CEM56NT
    -HKLM\SOFTWARE\Xircom
    -HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\CEM56, CEM56N4 and CEM56NT
    -HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\CEM561, CEM56N41 and CEM56NT1(the 1 may be any number 1 to n)
    -HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\EventLog\System\CEM56, CEM56N4 and CEM56NT
    -HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet00x\Services\CEM56, CEM56N4 and CEM56NT
    -HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet00x\Services\CEM561, CEM56N41 and CEM56NT1 (the 1 may be any number 1 to n)
    -HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet00x\Services\EventLog\System\CEM56, CEM56N4 and CEM56NT
    -HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PCMCIA\ Database\Xircom
    (Remove just the ethernet + modem specific entries under the \Xircom folder.)
    - After removing the registry keys, restart the computer.  Reinstall using the installation instructions above.
