Troubleshooting Installation Difficulties
If the computer does not automatically install the software for the Xircom® adapter when inserted (after a cold boot) please do the following:
- Shut down the machine and remove the Xircom adapter from the PCMCIA slot.
- From the desktop, right click the My Computer icon. Click Properties and the Device Manager tab.
- Look through the installed devices for the PCMCIA Socket listing. If present, double click this listing to verify the type of PCMCIA controller the machine uses. If the PCMCIA device listing contains a red 'X' or yellow exclamation point close the Device Manager and from the Control Panel double click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon. The PCMCIA Wizard should auto-detect and install PCMCIA support. After the PCMCIA support drivers are installed the machine will need to reboot to activate the PCMCIA controller. Please shut down and reboot the machine.
- If the 'PCMCIA Socket'device is not listed, go back to the Control Panel open the Add New Hardware icon and click the Next button. If you are not certain about the type of PCMCIA controller your laptop uses click the Yes button and click Next so Windows 95 will search fornew PCMCIA hardware.
a) If you know what type of controller your laptop uses click the No button, click Next, select PCMCIA Socket and click Next again. Select the appropriate PCMCIA controller type and follow the prompts. The machine will need to restart for the new settings to take effect.
Please note! Without PCMCIA support PCMCIA adapters will not function under Windows 95. If the PCMCIA install Wizard does not function properly and there is no listing for the 'PCMCIA Socket' controller in the Device Manager window please contact your laptop vendor for installation assistanceand/or the availability of compatible Windows 95 PCMCIA drivers for your particular machine.
- After successfully installing the PCMCIA controller and rebooting the machine, insert the adapter again. Windows 95 should autodetect the adapter and install the drivers. If you do not see the 'New Hardware Detected' window appear immediately after loading Windows 95, the Xircom adapter has not been detected and the drivers will not be automatically installed. If the drivers did not load please proceed to step 6. Otherwise your adapter should be installed and operational.
- From the desktop, double click the My Computer icon, open the Control Panel and double click the Add New Hardware icon. Click the Next button, choose the NO radio button and click Next again. Locate and highlight the Multifunction adapter listing by clicking on it. Click Next again. Locate and click the Have Disk button. Enter the path to the drivers (if you are installing the drivers from a diskette press the Enter key). You should then see the Xircom® CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 28.8 listing in the Models box. Click Next. Click Next again. Windows should install the drivers for network and modem functionality.
- If the drivers do not successfully install, check again for any yellow exclamation points or red 'X's in the Device Manager listing. If there is no listing for the multifunction adapter there may be a resource conflict with other internal or external devices connected to the PC. There may also be an undetectable issue with the PCMCIA slots of the machine. Please call Xircom Technical support at one of the numbers listed at the end of this document for further troublshooting.
Troubleshooting Network Difficulties
If the adapter software installs but you can not gain access to your network (or you notice a yellow exclamation point or red 'X' on the Network adapter listing in the Device Manager) please do the following:
- Right click the My Computer icon, click on the Properties listing and the Device Manager tab. Double click the 'Multifunction adapter' listing and double click the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 28.8 Performance Series listing.
- Click the Resources tab and Remove the check mark from the Use Automatic Settings box.
- Locate the first memory range listing in the Resource Settings box. Click on the words Memory Range and click the Change Settings button.
- Using the up arrow to the right of the memory range listing, changethe memory range to 000D2000 - 000D2FFF. Check the Conflict Information box below the Memory Value box to verify that there is no conflict with the chosen range. If there is, continue clicking the up arrow in the Memory Value box until you locate a range that does not report a conflict.
- Click OK . Windows 95 will read the changes and activate the new settings. When Windows 95 activates the new settings you should hear two beeps indicating the adapter has been recognized and initialized.
At this point (if you are connecting to more than the Microsoft network) you may need to install additional protocols required for your specific network. Please consult your Windows 95 installation manual for this information.
If the adapter does not initialize, repeat steps 1 through 5 changing the interrupt instead of the memory address. If altering these options has no effect, contact one of Xircom's Technical Support offices (listed at the end of this document) for more detailed troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting Modem Difficulties
In most cases, difficulties with modem operation can be traced to interrupt, memory address or communications port conflicts with other devices. Modem difficulties can also be caused by a change of the Windows communications driver.
If Windows 95 has installed the drivers for the Performance Series CreditCard Ethernet+Modem Adapter 28.8 and the modem is not functioningproperly please do the following:
- Following steps 1-5 from the previous section (Troubleshooting Network Difficulties) try changing the interrupt and/or memory address for the adapter.
- If your machine is equipped with an infrared port you may need to disable this port for proper functionality of the modem. Most infrared ports can be disabled from the laptop setup program or CMOS setup. Please refer to your laptop documentation for information on disabling the infrared port.
- From the desktop, right click the My Computer icon, click the Properties listing and the Device Manager tab. Click on the Ports (Com & LPT) listing to see if there are four communications ports installed. If so, the machine may not have an available communications port for the modem to use. You may need to remove a communications port in order for Windows 95 to allocate that port to the modem. PLEASE use extreme caution when adding or removing communications ports. If you remove a communication port allocated to another device, it will render that device inoperative. If you are not familiar with the process of adding and/or removing communications ports from Windows 95 we strongly suggest seeking the aid of one who is (such as a network administrator or consultant).
- Some communications packages replace the Windows 95 communications driver (COMM.DRV) with another driver that may not be as compatible as that supplied with Windows 95. You can check this by opening the Modem icon from the Control Panel, click the Diagnostics tab and click the Driver button. The message should read 'The communications driver is comm.drv'. If it reports a different driver, you can change it back to the default COMM.DRV driver by doing the following:
Click the Start button from the Windows 95 task bar and click the Run listing. Type SYSEDIT and press the Enter key. Approximately five screens will appear, one of which is the SYSTEM.INI file. Click the title bar of the SYSTEM.INI file to bring it to the front. Locate the (BOOT) section (normally at the top of the file) and the COMM.DRV= line.
Remark the COMM.DRV line by placing a semicolon(;) at the beginning ofit and insert the following line directly below it:
COMM.DRV=COMM.DRV
Save the file, close down Windows* 95 and restart. Then try testing the modem with a communications package.
- Some difficulties can also be caused by different communications packages that are not completely compatible with Windows* 95. Try using Windows* 95 Hyperterminal. If Hyperterminal functions correctly and another package does not, the package you are trying to use may not be completely compatible with Windows 95. Check the documentation and README.TXT file of the communications package for compatibility information. Some packages list instructions for better operations under Windows 95.
If this troubleshooting document does not help correct difficulties, you are experiencing with your Performance Series CreditCard Ethernet+Modem Adapter 28.8 please call the Xircom Technical Support department closest to you.
