General
Before proceeding, obtain the latest drivers for your CEM2 adapter from our Web site.
Please have the Windows NT* 3.51 diskettes or CD-ROM available for the driver installation. The driver installation will require the diskettes for various protocol and network support files.
Review the README.TXT file found with the latest driver files for the most recent information on these drivers.
If you have already installed the Windows* NT 3.51 operating system, please begin with step number two of the following installation instructions.
Installation:
- Install the Windows NT* 3.51 operating system.
- Do not install the networking portion of the operating system at this time. (The network portion of the installation will be performed when the adapter driver is installed in the following steps.)
- After completing the NT 3.51 installation, shut the machine down and insert the adapter. Turn the machine back on, start and log in to NT 3.51. Then, open the Control Panel from the Main group Window by double clicking the Control Panel icon.
- If you have already installed the networking portion of the operating system, double click the Network icon, then click the Add Adapter icon and go to Step 8.
- If you have not already installed the networking portion of the operating system, double click the Network icon. NT will display a dialog box asking if you want to install Networking at this time. Click the Yes button. The NT setup window will appear asking for the NT installation files. Please follow the prompts to perform the network install.
- NT will ask if you want the operating system to detect the adapter. Click the Do Not Detect button.
- The Network Adapter Card Detection window will report that it did notdetect the adapter and will ask if you want to install Remote Access Services at this time, click the Continue button. (If you need to install Remote Access Service (RAS) see your Microsoft NT documentation for installation instructions).
- Next you will see the Add Network Adapter window. View the available adapter listings by clicking the down arrow at the right of the Network Adapter Card list box. Then, scroll to the bottom of the adapter listing and choose the Requires disk from manufacturer option. Place your Xircom drivers diskette in drive A: and click the Continue button. (If you downloaded the drivers to a directory on your hard drive, enter the path to that directory.) Click the OK button.
- Highlight the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem II selection in the Select OEM option box and click the OK button.
- NT will pause for a moment, and present you with a setup dialog box for the CreditCard Ethernet+Modem Adapter II. NT will attempt to choose the best resources settings for your adapter installation. If you know that your machine requires different settings you can change the settings in this window. If you are not sure about the settings, accept the defaults by clicking the OK button. (Note: If you have previously installed the networking portion of the operating system with another adapter, steps 11 through 18 will not apply. Click the OK button and go to step 20.)
- The next dialog box will ask which network protocols you plan to use. Normally, a Microsoft or Novell*/Microsoft* network will use NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport and NetBEUI Transport. NT will also offer TCP/IP. (Note: If you are connecting to your network using TCP/IP, make sure you know your IP address and the gateway address you will use. This information will be required for the TCP/IP setup. You should be able to obtain this information from your network administrator.)
- Place an X in the appropriate boxes and click the Continue button.
- If you choose to install TCP/IP proceed with step 14. If not, proceed with step 15.
- If you placed an X in the TCP/IP box you will be presented with a Windows NT TCP/IP Installation Options dialog box. Choose which options you will need by placing an X in the appropriate boxes and click Continue to enter your IP address and gateway information. Then, click the OK button.
- Click OK at the Network settings window to allow NT to load and bind the protocols to the adapter driver.
- If you chose the NWlink and NetBEUI protocols you will be presented with an NWlink IPX/SPX Protocol Configuration window. Click the OK button to accept the defaults and allow auto detection of the frame type used on the network.
- If you chose to install TCP/IP you will be presented with a TCP/IP Configuration dialog box, proceed with step 18. If you did not choose TCP/IP please proceed with step 20.
- If your machine will receive its IP address from a DHCP server place an X in the Enable Automatic DHCP Configuration box. If not, enter your IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway in their appropriate places. You may need to consult your network administrator for additional information concerning your TCP/IP configuration.
- When you have entered all of the information click the OK button. NT will perform the binding analysis and bind the protocols to the driver.
- Next, you should see the Domain/Workgroup Settings window. In this window you will need to enter the name of the work group you will be using or enter the name of the Domain your machine will work in. Check the appropriate radio button and enter either your Workgroup or Domain name. (Note: Workgroup is the default Workgroup name used by Microsoft networks. You can accept this unless you know that your Workgroup uses a different name. If you are joining a Domain, verify with the Network Administrator that you have a user account setup on the Server. You will need the name and password for your user account so you can log into the domain.
- Click the OK button.
- NT will need to restart your machine. Click the Restart Computer button. After rebooting, choose the first NT option listed and wait for NT to start.
- Once NT has started, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to log in. Enter your user name and password, then click the OK button. (Note: Shortly after the small Welcome box appears (before you log in) you should see a green solid light on the CreditCard Ethernet+Modem Adapter II network media cable. The other light should flash for a few seconds as the driver initializes the adapter and the machine connects to the network. The flashing light indicates network transmission activity.)
- To test your network connection after you log onto the network, open File Manager from the Main group window, click the Disk pull-down menu and click the Connect Network Drive option. If the adapter is functioning correctly this should bring up the Connect Network Drive dialog box listing the available Workgroups, Servers and Workstations on the network.
Troubleshooting:
In most instances, driver installation can be performed without any difficulties. However, different issues can keep the adapter from initializing properly after installation. The following is a short section of troubleshooting suggestions that may correct some of these issues. This troubleshooting section is in no way an exhaustive reference but does contain the most common issues.
Problem: I receive the following error and I cannot see anything on the network; 'At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details .'
Investigation: Open the Administrative Tools icon from the Program Manager window. Open the Event Viewer icon. You should see various errors listed. You can view the error messages by double clicking on one of them. You can use the Previous and Next buttons to move from one error to another.
Read through the various errors (read from bottom to top). You should see errors reporting that the adapter could not be found or that different protocols could not bind to the adapter.
Solution 1: Close down the Event Log Viewer and the Administrative Tools window and open the Control Panel from the Main window. Open the Network icon. Highlight the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem II listing in the Installed Adapter Cards: box and click the Configure button. The Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem II configuration window will appear showing the current settings for the adapter. The defaults should reflect the following:
--I/O Port Address: 0x300 --Memory Address: 0xD0000 --Interrupt: 5 --Modem Port: COM4 --Modem I/O Port Address: 0x2E8 --Modem Interrupt: 3
Try changing the Memory Address: from D0000 to D8000 or C8000. Click the OK button. NT will reconfigure the network adapter for the changes and will need to restart. Click the Restart Now button.
If the error messages in the Event Viewer reflected an interrupt or I/O port conflict you should try changing the interrupt or I/O port to one of the other available addresses listed in the corresponding list boxes in the adapter configuration screen. If you are not using your infrared port, try disabling it in the BIOS and set your CEM2 Interrupt to 03.
Solution 2: If you have installed any NT service pack upgrades, your PCMCIA.SYS driver may be corrupted or there may a compatibility issue. Try copying the original PCMCIA.SYS driver (dated: 5-26-95) from the NT CD-ROM or diskettes to the Windows* System 32 Drivers directory and restart the machine.
Solution 3: Try upgrading to the latest NT 3.51 Service Pak.
Problem: I can see the Novell server but I can't see Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95 or other NT users. Usually, when you are able to see other machines (either servers or workstations) on the network the adapter is functioning properly. If you are not able to see certain machines on the network a required protocol may be missing.
Possible solution: Verify that both NWlink IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols are loaded and functioning by opening the Main, Control Panel and Network windows. Verify that NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport and NetBEUI are listed in the 'Installed Network Software' window. If either one of them are not listed you can add them by clicking on the Add Software button, choosing the one that is not loaded and clicking the OK button. NT will add the appropriate files. If this does not help, check the Error Log for any error messages related to protocols, drivers or services failing to load by opening the Administrative Tools and Event Viewer icons. Read the error messages (if any) from the bottom to the top.
Problem: I can see everybody on the network except for the Novell* Server.
Possible solution: Verify that the Nwlink IPX/SPX protocol is loaded and functioning by opening the Main, Control Panel and Network windows. Verify that NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport is listed in the Installed Network Software window. If it is not listed you can add it by clicking on the Add Software button, choosing the NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport listing and clicking the OK button. NT will add the appropriate files. If this does not help, check the Error Log for any error messages related to protocols, drivers or services failing to load by opening the Administrative Tools and Event Viewer icons. Read the error messages (if any) from the bottom to the top. If errors continue to occur, you may need to call into technical support for more detailed troubleshooting of the difficulty. If this is needed please see the technical support numbers listed below.
Problem: " While reading through the Event Log, I noticed errors concerning the COM port I am using for the modem conflicting with another device."
Solution: This may not be a problem. NT does not have the plug and play capability that Windows* 95 has to detect multifunction adapters and may be incorrectly detecting a conflict between the two devices that does not exist. Try your modem using a communications package. It should work fine. If the modem does not function, try changing the port address and interrupt for the modem in the adapter configuration window to another COM port. Typical COM port settings are listed below:
--COM 1, IRQ 4, PORT 3F8 (this may be used by the mouse) --COM 2, IRQ 3, PORT 2F8 --COM 3, IRQ 4, PORT 3E8 --COM 4, IRQ 3, PORT 2E8
