A. Troubleshooting Installation Difficulties

If the computer does not automatically install the software for the Xircom adapter when inserted (after a cold boot) please do the following:

  1. Shut down the machine and remove the Xircom adapter from the PCMCIA slot.
  2. From the desktop, right click the My Computer icon. Click Properties and the Device Manager tab.
  3. Look through the installed devices for the PCMCIA Socket listing. If present, double click this listing to verify the type of PCMCIA controller the machine uses. If the PCMCIA device listing contains a red 'X' or yellow exclamation point, close the Device Manager and from the Control Panel double click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon. The PCMCIA Wizard should auto-detect and install PCMCIA support. After the PCMCIA support drivers are installed the machine will need to reboot to activate the PCMCIA controller.
  4. If the PCMCIA Socket device is not listed, go back to the Control Panel, open the Add New Hardware icon and click the NEXT button. If you are not certain about the type of PCMCIA controller your laptop uses, click the YES button and click Next so Windows 95 will search for new PCMCIA hardware.
  5. If you know what type of controller your laptop uses click the NO button, click NEXT, select PCMCIA Socket and click NEXT again.
  6. Select the appropriate PCMCIA controller type and follow the prompts. The machine will need to restart for the new settings to take effect.

    *****PLEASE NOTE *****
  7. Without PCMCIA support, PCMCIA adapters will not function under Windows 95. If the PCMCIA install Wizard does not function properly and there is no listing for the PCMCIA Socket controller in the Device Manager window, please contact your laptop vendor for installation assistance and/or the availability of compatible Windows 95 PCMCIA drivers for your particular machine.
  8. After successfully installing the PCMCIA controller and rebooting the machine, insert the adapter again. Windows 95 should autodetect the adapter and install the drivers. If you do not see the New Hardware Detected window appear immediately after loading Windows 95, the Xircom adapter has not been detected and the drivers will not be automatically installed. If the drivers did not install please proceed with step 6, otherwise you adapter should be installed and operational.
  9. From the desktop, double click the My Computer icon, open the Control Panel and double click the Add New Hardware icon. Click the Next button, choose the NO radio button and click Next again. Locate and highlight the Network adapter listing by clicking on it. Click Next again. Locate and click on the Have Disk button. Enter the path to the drivers (if you are installing the Xircom drivers from a diskette press the Enter key). You should then see the Xircom XPS NDIS 3.0 Protected Mode driver listing in the Models box. Click this listing and click OK. Click Finish. Windows should install the driver for your Performance Series CreditCard Ethernet Adapter II. The installation may also require the Windows 95 installation diskettes or CD-ROM.
  10. If the drivers do not successfully install, check again for any yellow exclamation points or red 'X's in the Device Manager listing. If there is no listing for the network adapter there may be a resource conflict with other internal or external devices connected to the PC. There may also be an undetectable issue with the PCMCIA slots of the machine. Please call Xircom Technical support at one of the numbers listed at the end of this document for further troubleshooting.

B. Troubleshooting Network Difficulties

If the adapter software installs but you can not gain access to your network (or you notice a yellow exclamation point or red 'X' on the Network adapter listing in the Device Manager) please do the following:

  1. Right click on the My Computer icon, click on the Properties listing and the Device Manager tab. Double click the Network Adapters listing, double click the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet Adapter-IIps CreditCard Ethernet Adapter listing.
  2. Click the Resources tab and remove the check mark from the Use Automatic Settings box.
  3. Locate the first memory range listing in the Resource Settings box. Click on the words Memory Range and click the Change Settings button.
  4. Using the up arrow to the right of the memory range listing change the memory range to 000D2000 - 000D2FFF. Please notice the Conflict Information box below the Memory Value box to verify that there is no conflict with the chosen range. If there is, continue clicking the up arrow in the Memory Value box until you locate a range that does not reflect a conflict.
  5. Click OK. Windows 95 will read the changes and activate the new settings. When Windows 95 activates the new settings you should hear a two-tone sound indicating the adapter has been recognized and initialized.

At this point (if you are connecting to more than the Microsoft network) you may need to install additional protocols required for your network. Please consult your installation manual for this information.

If the adapter does not initialize please try repeating steps 1 through 5 changing the interrupt instead of the memory address. If altering these options has no effect, please call the Xircom's technical support office closest to you for more detailed troubleshooting.
