Section 1 of this document applies only to the Intel® PRO/100+ family of adapters, the PRO/100B and PRO/10+ PCI. Section 2 applies to all other Intel adapters. Follow the procedure below that applies to your adapter to insure complete removal of the Intel adapter software from Windows* 95 or 98 prior to reinstalling.
1. IntelPRO/100+, PRO/100+ Management adapter, PRO/100+ Server adapter, PRO/100+ Dual Port Server adapter, PRO/100B and PRO/10+ PCI.
If you installed your adapter with driver software release 3.0 or higher, a removal function is included. You can remove the adapter software by opening the Control Panel and selecting Add/Remove Programs. The Intel adapter will be listed. Simply highlight the Intel adapter and select Add/Remove. Alternately, you can start PROSet from the Control Panel and select Uninstall from the Support tab.
If you installed your adapter with a software release prior to 3.0, you can download PRO98 (for Windows 98), PROME (for Windows ME) or PRO95 (for Windows 95) from Intel's electronic services. These archives contain an uninstall utility file named 8255XDEL.EXE. Execute this file on your system to remove the driver software. You can also follow the steps in section 2 below. You can also follow the steps in section 2 below.
2. All other Intel adapters.
CAUTION: This procedure involves editing the Windows registry. Any changes made with the Registry Editor take place immediately and there is no UNDO function. Incorrect entries may cause Windows 95/98 to no longer function. Please have a complete backup of your hard drive before continuing, including the hidden registry files, SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT.
Note 1: To properly remove Client 32 or the IntranetWare* Client for Windows 95, you must download and run the uninstall utility found on Novell's electronic services. Manually removing it from the Network Properties list or the Device Manager list will not remove it from the registry.
Note 2: The directory path names in this document are written on the assumption that the Windows installation directory is named C:\WINDOWS. If Windows is installed in a directory other than C:\WINDOWS, substitute that path name in the instructions wherever C:\WINDOWS appears.
- Click Start and then Find. Use the find file function to locate all copies of the following files anywhere on the hard drive. If any are found, rename them with a different extension (e.g. NET557.OLD).
82557NDI.DLL NET82557.INF NET557.INF
- Open the Device Manager by clicking, in this order, Start, Settings, Control Panel, System and then the Device Manager tab.
- Look for an entry labeled "Other Devices". If it exists, open it by clicking on the plus symbol next to it. If there is a reference to a "PCI Ethernet Controller" or an Intel adapter, click on it and then click on remove. Do not restart Windows at this time.
- Start the registry editor by clicking Start and then Run. In the "Open:" box, enter C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT and press the enter key.
- In the Registry Editor window, click on the plus symbol next to each entry to open them in this order;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE System CurrentControlSet Services Class
- Under Class, find the following entries;
Net NetClient NetService NetTrans
If any of these have a plus (+) symbol next to them, click on the plus symbol to open them. You will see sequentially numbered folders underneath, usually 0000, 0001, etc. Under Net, each entry represents a network device such as a network adapter or dial up adapter. Under NetClient, each entry represents a client such as Client for Microsoft Networks. Under NetService, each entry represents a network service such as file and printer sharing. Under NetTrans, each entry represents a network protocol, such as NetBEUI.
- DO NOT delete the Net, NetClient, NetService and NetTrans folders.
If you wish to remove all networking (recommended if you are having network problems), follow procedure 7a. If you have other networking adapters you do not wish to remove, follow procedure7b.
7a. Highlight each of the numbered subfolders one at a time and press the delete key under Net, NetClient, NetService and NetTrans. Answer yes to the "Are you sure you want to delete this key?" dialog box each time. When you are finished, the Net, NetClient, NetService and NetTrans folders should still exist, but there should be no numbered subfolders under them.
7b. Under Net, highlight the numbered subfolders one at a time. To the right side of the Registry Editor screen there will be 2 columns, one labeled Name and one labeled Data. Find the Name entry "DriverDesc" and check the associated Data. This will be the description of the device. Highlight the numbered subfolder in which the name DriverDesc lists the Intel adapter as the data. Press the delete key on your keyboard. Answer yes to the "Are you sure you want to delete this key?" dialog box.
Close the Registry Editor. Click Start, Shutdown, and then Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.
At the MS-DOS prompt, enter CD\WINDOWS\INF. Delete the files, DRVDATA.BIN and DRVIDX.BIN. In the same directory, delete the information file for the network adapter as listed below. Then enter CD\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and delete the driver file for the network adapter as listed below.
