Symptom(s): While trying to install the Intel(R) PRO/100 or PRO/1000 network adapter in Windows* XP, there is an "invalid data" error.
Solution: Permissions for the adapter need to be set to Full Control to avoid this error. This requires making a change in the registry. Any work in the registry should be done with great care as changes to the registry can cause the system to function improperly.
To change the permissions in the registry: Click on Start, select Run and type "regedit" in the box to run the Windows XP Registry Editor. Go to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI .' Choose the " VEN_xxxx ", where xxxx is 8086&DEV_100x. (for gigabit) or DEV_1229 (for PRO/100). Confirm that you have the right device by checking that the "DeviceDesc" (in the folder) shows an Intel PRO/100 or PRO/1000 adapter. Right-click on the "VEN_8086" for the device you're trying to install and choose "Permissions." Under 'Group or User Names' highlight "everyone" Under 'Permissions for everyone' set "Full Control" to "Allow". Close Regedit. Reboot.
