Symptom(s): Unable to load Xircom® DOS drivers on a Gateway Solo* 5300 with Ricoh PC Card controllers. When using a DOS boot disk that was formatted with system files in Windows* 98, the Xircom DOS drivers will not load. This happens with both the 16-bit and 32-bit Xircom network adapter cards.
Solution: For 32-bit CardBus network adapters, force the memory address in the PROTOCOL.INI for the card to D8000. You may also have to add a memory exclusion in the CONFIG.SYS to reserve the memory space for the D8000 range. See the examples below:
PROTOCOL.INI
[ms$xirc] DRIVERNAME=XIRCOM$ interrupt=10 memory=d8000
CONFIG.SYS
files=30 device=a:\net\ifshlp.sys lastdrive=z DEVICE=A:\NET\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=A:\NET\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=D200-DFFF DOS=HIGH,UMB
For 16-bit PCMCIA network adapters, format the floppy disk using DOS 6.22 instead of Windows 98. You can also use Windows 95 to format the floppy disk. As with the 32-bit adapters, force the memory address in the PROTOCOL.INI to D8000. You may also have to add a memory exclusion in the CONFIG.SYS to reserve the memory space for the D8000 range.
Relevant Information: Load Xircom® DOS drivers on a Gateway Solo* 5300 with Ricoh PC Card controllers, MS-DOS* 6.22, Microsoft Windows* 98 SE, Microsoft Windows* 98, Gateway Solo* 5300
