Solution: The following information is provided in an effort to answer questions concerning Linux* support for Xircom® adapters. Xircom does not produce or support Linux or Unix* drivers for any Xircom PC cards. However, Xircom does offer a Software Development Kit (SDK), which is available on our Support Web site. Linux drivers for Xircom adapters can be developed using the information provided in the SDK. Xircom is aware that third party developers have written Linux drivers. Although Xircom provided the technical specifications so that these drivers could be written, they were developed independently by the Linux community. Xircom did not write these drivers and cannot support them. We understand that driver support for the following Xircom 16-bit PCMCIA cards has been included in several versions of Linux:
- All Xircom 16-bit "controllered" modem-only PC Cards (Does not apply to CardBus or "controllerless" modems)
- Xircom® 10/100 Network PC Card Adapter (XE2000)
- Xircom® 10/100 Network+Modem 56 PC Card Adapter (XEM5600)
- Xircom® CompactCard Ethernet 10 Adapter (CFE-10)
- Xircom® CreditCard Ethernet II Adapter (CE2)
- Xircom® CreditCard Ethernet 10 Adapter (CE3-10)
- Xircom® CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 Adapter (CE3B-100BTX)
- Xircom® CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 28.8 Adapter (CEM28)
- Xircom® CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 Adapter (CEM33)
- Xircom® CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 Adapter (CEM56-100)
- Xircom® CWE-1120 CreditCard Wireless Ethernet Adapter (CWE1120)
- Xircom® CWE-1130 CreditCard Wireless Ethernet Adapter (CWE1130)
- Xircom® RealPort Ethernet 10 Adapter (RE-10)
- Xircom® RealPort Ethernet 10/100 Adapter (RE-100)
- Xircom® RealPort Ethernet 10+Modem 56 GlobalACCESS Adapter (REM56-10)
- Xircom® RealPort Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 GlobalACCESS Adapter (REM56G-100)
- Xircom® RealPort2 Ethernet 10/100 Adapter (R2E-100BTX)

Linux support for Xircom CardBus adapters has recently been introduced. This support is provided in the form of a patch update to Tulip.c and a kernel PCMCIA patch. Do not attempt this procedure unless you already know how to patch and compile code to the kernel modules. If you are not comfortable with the patch process or with building your own utilities and kernel, wait for the patches to be accepted into the mainline code. If you cannot get it to work, Xircom will not be able to assist you in any way.
This CardBus PCMCIA patch may provide support for the following Xircom CardBus cards:
- Xircom® CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapters (CBE/CBE2/RBE/R2BE)
- Xircom® CardBus Ethernet 10/100+ Modem 56 Adapters (CBEM/RBEM/R2BEM)
- Xircom® RealPort CardBus 56K GlobalACCESS Modem Adapter (RBM56G)
As with most of Linux, PCMCIA support is a separate module that can be installed during the initial installation or it can be added, at anytime, to an existing Linux installation. Information on Linux PCMCIA support is available at:
