ACER ACROS 6209 486SX/33 EtherExpress 16 Adapter
Symptom:
EtherExpress A-step and B-step cards don't work reliably (data
transfer corruption on file transfers) in 16-bit mode. The cards may
even fail in 8-bit mode.
Description:
Some computers have been found to have excessive noise on the bus
control signals. The classic version of the EtherExpress card has a
higher tolerance for noise than the A-step and B-step versions. This
higher tolerance level allows the classic version to work in this
computer even though the A-step and B-step versions do not.
Solution:
Use the classic version of EtherExpress cards. The classic version has
a higher tolerance to noise and is fully compatible. The A-step or
B-step versions may work in 8-bit mode or if there are multiple cards
installed.

Compaq 286E EtherExpress 16 Family
Product: EtherExpress16 and 16TP adapters
Compatibility: Conditional
Intel has run many Compaq 286E systems with the EtherExpress 16 cards
without any problems. If a customer is reporting problems the report
below may help:
There has been a customer report of the EtherExpress 16 not working in
the Compaq 286E. Forcing 8-bit mode on the EtherExpress card allowed it
to work. The customer then changed a dip switch on the motherboard that
controls the power-up speed. Switching this dip switch to HIGH enabled
the EtherExpress 16 adapter to run in 16-bit mode.
Compaq deskpro 386/33L EtherExpress 16 Family
Product: EtherExpress 16 and 16TP Network Adapters
Compatibility: Conditional
The Compaq 386/33L is an EISA style machine. The EtherExpress 16 and
16TP cards work fine in this system, however, the EtherExpress 16 and
16TP cards are ISA cards. An EISA configuration file (!int1000.cfg) for
the EtherExpress 16 (ISA) card is located on the latest diskette.
Compaq Systempro 486/33 EtherExpress 32 COND
Product: EtherExpress 32 Network Adapter

Compaq 486/50M EtherExpress 16 Family
Product: EtherExpress 16 Network Adapter
Compatibility: Conditional
The Compaq 486/50M is an EISA style machine. An EISA configuration file
(!int1000.cfg) for the EtherExpress 16 (ISA) card is located on the
latest driver diskette.
Older versions of the IPX driver (before 2.00) for the EtherExpress 16
cards may return an error message stating the 82586 is not responding.
Versions after 2.00 corrected this problem.
Driver versions from 2.00 - 2.04 would load, but not run reliably. For
example, the system might hang during a data transfer over the network.
This problem is caused by the speed and the internal cache of the 80486
DX2 processor. This problem is corrected in version 2.05 or later of
our driver (2.06 is available through Intel's online services). IPX
driver name: EXP16SH. Note: Any computer using a DX2 processor might
have this problem.
Customer report:
Compaq tested the EtherExpress 16 card in this system without any
problems. However, we have received conflicting reports where customers
were not able to run the board in 16-bit I/O mapped mode. They would
get intermittent failures transmitting data over the network. If they
changed the board to 8-bit I/O mapped mode or 16-bit memory mapped mode
the EtherExpress 16 card worked fine.
Compaq Prolinea 486/50 EtherExpress Family

Product: EtherExpress 16 network adapter
Compatibility: Conditional
Customer reports that an EtherExpress 16 card must be in 8-bit mode to
work with a Data General 386SX-16 with on-board video. If the

of each line will shift off the left of the screen.
Customer reports that an EtherExpress 16 card used with an Orchid
Fahrenheit 1280 Plus video card (Bios version unknown) in the Data
General 386SX-16 machine with on-board video is incompatible. With this

attach to a NetWare* 4.0 server.
Description:
There may be a problem with FlashSet recognizing the 82596 in this

Solution:
Load the network drivers and if the machine is able to attach to a
server, ignore the self-test error. The self-test error is currently
being researched.
