The Xircom® CE3,RE-100, R2E Network Adapter fails to initialize after installation under Windows NT* 4.0 or Windows NT* becomes unstable after installing the Xircom adapter.

Cause:
This issue may be the result of a cancelled, corrupted, or incomplete adapter installation.

Resolution:
Before attempting another installation of the Xircom® 10/100 Ethernet Network Adapter, remove the installation files and registry entries associated with the previous attempts to install the Xircom adapter. This procedure also removes Windows NT* 4.0 Networking.

Software Requirements:

1. Latest Software Release - Driver download files containing the latest available software for your Xircom adapter may be obtained from our Support Web site.
   
   Note: After unpacking the download file, review the README.TXT included with this release. The README.TXT file contains information important to:
   • Adapter installation and configuration
     
   • New feature capabilities and applications
     
   • Known issues and fixes as of this software release.
     
2. Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Product Software - On computers shipped with factory installed versions of Windows NT 4.0, the files necessary for the installation of NT Networking with the Xircom adapter are contained in the \i386 directory. Computers upgraded to Windows NT 4.0 may require the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Product CD used to originally install the Windows NT.
   
3. Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Packs - Installation of a hardware device, in Windows NT 4.0, may require re-installing the current service pack before full functionality is available. This does not happen every time a new device is installed, but it does happens often enough to warrant preparation.

1. Open the Windows NT Networking dialog box.
   
   • Click the Windows NT Start button, and then point to Settings.
   • Click the Control Panel, and then double-click the Network icon.
     
     Note: The Windows NT Networking dialog box allows access to the network adapter, network services, and the network protocols. The following steps remove these items individually, which results in the removal of Windows NT Networking. The procedural description assumes that the Network dialog box remains open until instructed otherwise.
     
2. Remove the Xircom adapter entry from Windows NT Networking.
   
   • In the NT Networking dialog box click the Adapters tab, and then click the Xircom adapter entry.
   • Click Remove .
   • Repeat this process for unused network adapters displayed in the network adapter window.
     
3. Remove the network services from Windows NT Networking.
   
   • Click the Services tab.
   • Because of networking service dependencies, click the Workstation service first, and then click Remove .
   • Repeat this process for each networking service listed. No special order is required with the remaining services.
     
4. Remove the network protocols from Windows NT Networking.
   
   • Click the Protocol tab.
   • Click a listed protocol, and then click Remove .
   • Repeat this process for each installed Protocol .
     
5. Click Close , and then click NO; DO NOT RESTART the computer.
   
6. Open Windows NT* Explorer*.
   
   • Click the Windows NT Start button, and then point to Programs .
   • In the Programs Group, click Windows NT Explorer.
     
     Note: The following steps assume that Windows NT Explorer is open.
     
7. Enable the Windows NT Explorer feature "Show All Files ."
   Warning: This feature permits the modification of system files critical to the operation of Windows NT 4.0. Delete only the files listed in this procedure. Should you accidentally delete the wrong files, consult the Microsoft Online documentation section "Restoring Deleted Files", BEFORE restarting the computer.
   
   • On the View menu, click Folder Options .
   • Click the View tab, and then click Show All Files (located under the Hidden Files folder).
   • Click Apply, and then click OK.
     
8. Delete the Xircom driver and Dynamic Link Library (.DLL ) files copied to Windows NT during the adapter installation.
   
   • On the Tools menu, point to Find .
   • Click Files or Folder .
   • Type CE3*.* in the Name box, and then click Find .
   • Delete the following two files, if present:
     
     C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\CE3.SYS
     C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CE3.DLL
     
9. Delete the OEM files created during the Xircom adapter installation.
   
   • On the Tools menu, point to Find.
   • Click Files or Folder .
   • Type OEM*.* in the Named box.
   • In the Containing Text box (it may appear on the Advanced tab in some OEM versions of Windows NT 4.0) type CE3, and then click Find.
   • Delete the following two files, if present:
     
     --C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\OEMNADx.INF (NOTE 1)
     --C:\WINNT\INF\OEMx.INF (NOTE 2)
     
     Note 1: Multiple OEMNADx.INF files may appear in the search results windows. Delete only the OEMNADx.INF files where the seventh character "x" is a number 0 to n. DO NOT delete any OEMNADx.INF file where the seventh character is a letter of the alphabet.
     
     Note 2: The OEMx.INF file has a corresponding OEMx.PNF file. In both of these files the "x" is a number 0 to n, and both use the same number. For example - if an OEM1.INF appears as a result of the search, then a matching setup file OEM1.PNF is also present. Because it contains only machine code, it is not included in thesearch results (text-based); however, it must be deleted.
     
   • Double-click the C:\WINNT\INF\ folder so that the folder contents appear in the right pane of Windows NT Explorer. Delete the matching OEMx.PNF file (confirm the file deletion if needed).
     
     Note: You may need to expand the WINNT folder to see the INF subfolder. To expand the WINNT folder, click the "+" symbol next to the WINNT folder in the left pane of Windows NT Explorer.
     
10. Disable the Show all files feature to prevent inadvertent damage or loss of critical system files.
    
    • On the View menu, click Folder Options . 
    • Click the View tab, and then click Show all Files (removes the active indicator).
    • Click Apply, and then click OK .
      
11. Close Windows NT Explorer.
    
    Warning: The next step may involve changes to the system registry. Incorrect changes to the system registry may cause the system to become unstable resulting in the loss of important data. For your protection, make a backup of the system registry and update the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) before continuing. Use the Microsoft Online Documentation (Help files) sections "Backing Up the System Registry" and "Updating the ERD " to assist with this effort.
    
12. Open the Windows NT Registry Editor .
    
    • Click Windows NT Start , and then click Run.
    • Type REGEDT32 in the Run box, and then click OK.
    • In the Registry Editor , click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE title bar to make it the active window. These procedures modifies registry entries on the HKLM page only.
      
      Note: In the following steps, HKLM refers to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
      
13. On the View menu, click Find Key.
    
14. Type CE3 in the Find box, and then click Find Next .
    
15. If found, click the CE3 key (appears enclosed in a box), and then delete it by pressing the computer's Delete key or click Delete on the Edit menu. Click OK to confirm the action, and then press the computer's F3 key to continue the registry search.
    
16. Continue the process of locating and deleting the CE3 keys until the message "Finished Searching the Registry" appears.
    
    Note: Specific registry locations for each Xircom adapter entry are included for informational purposes. It is possible to navigate the registry path to each key, using this information. However, this method is time consuming, which is why the find tool
    is recommended.

    Note 1: In most cases, CE31 is used, but the 1 can be any number 1 through n.
    
    Note 2: The "x" in ControlSet00x can be any number 2 through n.
    
17. Close the Registry Editor .
    
18. Shut down the computer and turn-off computer power.
    
19. Turn-on computer power and login to Windows NT.
    
    WARNING: Windows NT is now ready for the installation of Windows NT Networking and the Xircom adapter. Some computers use third-party Card Services software to configure and manage PCMCIA adapters. In some cases special drivers are provided, by Xircom, to support this software. The README.TXT file, included with the Xircom adapter software, provides additional information on this subject.
