Sound distortion or interruption when disconnecting Xircom® CardBus

Sound Distortion or Interruption When Disconnecting Xircom® CardBus Ethernet Adapters From the Network on Computers Running Windows* 2000

Applies to Xircom® CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 Adapters (CBEM56G-100, RBEM56G-100, R2BEM56G-100).

In Windows* 2000, Xircom® CardBus Ethernet adapters create sound distortion or interruption in sound files when the adapter is disconnected from network. Problems occurs on various machines if the adapter is disconnected during boot or disconnected from the network after Windows 2000 has loaded.

Resolution of this issue requires updating to the latest drivers from our Web site and disabling Cable Detect in Advanced Properties of the network adapter.

Use the "Update Driver Wizard" to update the driver for the Xircom network adapter:

1. Right-click My Computer and click Properties .
2. In the System Properties box, click the Hardware tab and then click on the Device Manager button.
3. In Device Manager, double-click Network Adapters and double-click the Xircom network adapter .
4. Click the Driver tab and click the Update driver button.
5. Follow the prompts to update the driver for the card.

Note: In the case of the CBEM56/RBEM56, you must point specifically to the NDIS5 folder.

After updating to the latest drivers, change the Cable Detect keyword in the Advanced Properties of the Xircom network adapter to Off.

To get to the Advanced Properties of the network adapter:

1. Right-click My Computer and click Properties.
2. In the System Properties box, click the Hardware tab and then click on the Device Manager button.
3. In Device Manager, double-click Network Adapters, and double-click the Xircom network adapter .
4. Click the Advanced tab. Highlight the keyword Cable Detect in the Property box.
5. Change the value on the right-hand side to Off.
6. Click OK to close the adapter's Properties box.

Restart the computer. This should solve the problem.
