Xircom Drivers
The Xircom drivers are located on the Xircom Driver CD that comes with the Xircom card. However, drivers are updated from time to time to resolve issues and provide enhancements. We recommend that you download the latest driver set from our Web site and use that to install your Xircom card. The instructions in this document request that you point to the Xircom CD for the Xircom drivers. In order to use the downloaded driver files, point to the extracted Xircom files instead of the Xircom CD.

We strongly recommend making a copy of your registry before proceeding. Please consult your Microsoft documentation for detailed instructions for creating a registry backup.
In the following registry path descriptions, HKLM refers to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.
- Start the Registry Editor:
- Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run. Type REGEDIT in the Open box, and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
- Click the plus sign (+) next to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key (folder) to expand it. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key, expand the Enum key, and then expand the PCMCIA key.

- On the Registry menu, click Exit.
Note: It is necessary to update the following three Windows files for CardBus cards to work properly in Windows 95 OSR2:
-- CBSS.VXD -- PCI.VXD -- PCCARD.VXD
Microsoft has now electronically posted a file containing the updated VXD files. The file to download is named PCCARDUPD.EXE. This file contains updated versions of CBSS.VXD, PCCARD.VXD, PCI.VXD. AT the time this document was published, the PCCARDUPD.EXE file was available on the Microsoft Web site*.

- If the PCMCIA wizard appears, follow the prompts to install PCMCIA support for your computer. Accept the default values on each screen. Restart the computer.
- If the PC Card Properties appears and indicates Empty - Socket 1 and Empty - Socket 2, then PCMCIA support has already been installed.
- Continue to Installation Section.
Installation
This section will assist with the installation of the Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 Global Access (CBEM56-100) and RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56 Global Access (RBEM56G-100).
All necessary Xircom files are located on the root of the Xircom CD that came with the product. The Windows 95 OSR2 source files, which are required during the installation, are typically located on the local hard drive in the \WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS directory. These files can also be found in the \WIN95 directory on the Windows 95 CDROM.
- Start the computer WITHOUT the CBEM56G/RBEM56G adapter inserted. Allow Windows 95 OSR2 to boot fully.
- Place the Xircom CD into the CD-ROM drive or be sure that you know the full path to the directory where the CBEM56G/RBEM56G driver files are located.
- Insert the CBEM56G/RBEM56G into the computer's PC Card slot. Windows will automatically detect the presence of the card and indicate that it has found new hardware by displaying a dialog box entitled "Update Device Driver Wizard". Prior to displaying the dialog box, Windows 95 OSR2 may indicate that it is building a driver information database. If this process occurs, allow it to complete.
- The text in the dialog box should read "This wizard will complete the installation of: PCI Ethernet Controller". Click Next to continue.
- Windows 95 OSR2 will search the floppy drive for the card's driver. If the CBEM56G/RBEM56G installation files are located in a directory on the hard drive, select the Other Location button and supply the path to this directory. If Windows still recognizes the card as a PCI Ethernet Controller, make sure you are typing in the correct path to the driver files.
- Once Windows 95 OSR2 indicates that it has found the driver the "Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100 (Ethernet Interface)", click Finish.
- Windows 95 OSR2 should read the installation files and complete the installation of the CBEM56G/RBEM56G card. During this process Windows 95 OSR2 may indicate that it is building a driver information database. At any point during the process Windows 95 OSR2 may request additional files. If this occurs enter the path to the Windows 95 OSR2 source files. All files required for this installation reside in either the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS directory, the Windows 95 OSR2 CD, or on the Xircom CD.
- You may or may not be prompted to restart the computer. Do so if prompted.
- Next, Windows should detect a PCI Serial Controller. The text in the dialog box should read "This wizard will complete the installation of: PCI Serial Controller". Click Next to continue.
This is the modem interface of the card. Follow Step #5 above to supply the path to the drivers to complete the installation. Once Windows 95 OSR2 indicates that it has found the driver the "Xircom CardBus Modem 56 (Modem Interface)", click Finish. Restart the computer if prompted.
- When the installation process has completed go to the Windows 95 OSR2 Device Manager to verify the installation. This can be reached by doing the following:
- Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel. - Double-click the System icon in Control Panel. - In System Properties, select the Device Manager tab.
The Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 card entries should be listed as follows:
Modem: Xircom CardBus Modem 56 (Modem Interface)
Network adapters: Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100 (Ethernet Interface)
- Execute SETUP.EXE on the Xircom CD to install the Xircom Utilities program group on the system.
At the completion of the adapter installation, open the Control Panel and then double-click the Network icon. Review the clients and protocols displayed in the Network Properties box for applicability to your network. Add and configure network clients and protocols as required.
