Installing under Windows NT 4.0
The Xircom® CardBus Ethernet + Modem adapters support manual installation under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. Plug and Play installation and hot swapping of CardBus adapters are not directly supported by Windows NT. For information on use of these adapters with third-party card and socket services software such as Softex* or Card Executive*, see the README file.
Ethernet setup:
- With Windows NT 4.0 running, connect the cables and insert the CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 into the CardBus PC Card slot.

- With the CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 in the PC Card slot, click Start, Settings, and Control Panel. The Control Panel opens.

- Double-click the Network icon. The Network Settings window opens.

- Select the Adapters tab. The Network Adapters window opens.

- Click Add. The Select Network Adapterwindow opens.

- Click Have Disk type in the path to the Xircom CD-ROM.

- Click OK. The Select OEM Option window opens.

- Click OK. The Windows NT Setup window briefly displays.

The Xircom CardBus 10/100+Modem 56 Settings window opens, displaying the default settings. In most circumstances, the default settings will properly operate the adapter. However, consult the README.TXT file on the Xircom CD-ROM for the latest recommendations.

- Click OK. The Network Settings window redisplays.

- Click Close. If the TCP/IP dialog box appears, configure accordingly or contact your Network Administrator.

- When the Network Settings Change window opens, click Yes to restart the computer.

Modem Setup:
- After the computer has been restarted, select Modems from the Control Panel.

- At the Install New Modem screen make sure that the Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list checkbox is NOT checked. Click Next.

- Windows NT will query the COM ports looking for the Xircom modem. Once the Xircom modem is found, click Next, and if a Standard Modem is found, click Change.

- On the next screen, click Have disk.

- Select the path to Xircom CD-ROM and click OK.

- At the Install New Modem screen, click Finish.

- At the Modems Properties click Dialing Properties... to set up dialing properties. (This is not necessary if a modem had been previously installed.) Click Close.

- Configure RAS to use the Xircom modem.

- Click Run, Start and select SETUP.EXE from the Xircom compact disc.

- Click the menu item "Install Software and Tools."

- Follow the onscreen instructions. Xircom utilities and online documentation will be copied to your hard drive and installed under Start, Programs, Xircom Utilities.

Note: You must have Microsoft* Internet Explorer* or Netscape* Navigator* installed to view the online documentation.

Click Yes, when prompted to restart the computer.

To change the country configuration of your modem, run RealView* under Start, Programs, Xircom Utilities and select the CountrySelect tab.

- Choose the country from where you will make modem calls, and then click Save.

- Click the Help button on the CountrySelect tab for additional information.

Uninstalling under Windows NT 4.0
- Remove installed modems:

- Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click the Modems icon.

- Select the Xircom modem entry, and find the CardBus Ethernet 100+Modem 56 under Modem, select it, and click Remove.

- Perform the same action for modem entries such as Standard PCMCIA modem or any other modem not internally part of the computer.

- Close Modems. If the dialogue box for RAS appears, click Cancel.

Remove all installed COM ports:

- In Control Panel, double-click the Ports icon.

- Click COM1, and then click Delete.

- Repeat this process for each installed COM port.

- Close Ports.

Remove the Xircom adapter entry from Windows NT Networking:

- In Control Panel, double-click the Network icon. Select the Adapters tab, and then click the Xircom adapter entry.

- Click Remove.

- Repeat this process for unused network adapters displayed in the network adapter window.

Click Close, and then click No DO NOT RESTART the computer.

To uninstall the Xircom utilities, click Start, Programs, Xircom Utilities, and then Uninstall Xircom Utilities.

Note: Before uninstalling the utilities, exit RealView by right-clicking the RealView icon in the System Tray and selecting Exit RealView.

Open Windows NT Explorer:

- Click Windows NT Start, and then point to Programs.

- In the Programs Group, click Windows NT Explorer.

Note: The following steps and assume that Windows NT Explorer remains open until otherwise instructed.

Enable the Windows NT Explorer feature Show All Files.

Warning: This feature permits the modification of system files critical to the operation of Windows NT 4.0. Delete only the files listed in this procedure. Should you accidentally delete the wrong files, consult the Microsoft Online documentation section Restoring Deleted Files, BEFORE restarting the computer.

- On the View menu, click the Folder Options.

- Click the View tab, and then click Show All Files (located under the Hidden Files folder).

- Click Apply, and then click OK.

Delete the Xircom network driver, modem driver, and Dynamic Link Library (.DLL) files copied to Windows NT during the adapter installation.

- On the Tools menu, click Find.

- Click Files or Folder.

- Type CBE*.* in the Named box.

- Type C:\WINNT in the Look in box, and then click Find.

- Delete the following files, if present:

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\CBE*.SYS
-- C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\CBMODEM*.SYS
-- C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CBE*.DLL
where *=any characters embedded within the file name

Delete the Xircom modem installation files copied to Windows NT 4.0 during the adapter installation.

- On the Tools menu, click Find.

- Click Files or Folder.

- Type MDMCBEM.* in the Named box.

- Type C:\WINNT in the Look in box, and then click Find.

- Delete the following files, if present:

C:\WINNT\INF\MDMCBEM.INF
-- C:\WINNT\INF\MDMCBEM.PNF

Delete the OEM files created during the Xircom adapter installation.

- On the Tools menu, click Find.

- Click Files or Folder.

- Type OEM*.* in the Name box.

- Type C:\WINNT in the Look In box.

- In the Containing Text box, which may appear on the Advanced tab in some OEM versions of Windows NT 4.0, type CBE, and then click Find.

- Find the OEMx.INF files located in the
C:\WINNT\INF folder write them down. Find the following
OEMNAD*.* file(s) located in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32
folder, delete them if present:

-- C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\OEMNADx.INF
(NOTE)

Note: Multiple
OEMNADx.INF files may appear in the search results
windows. Delete only the OEMNADx.INF files where the
seventh character "x" is a number 0 to n. DO NOT delete any
OEMNADx.INF file where the seventh character is a letter of the alphabet.

- For the OEM*.* files that you wrote down, go to the C:\WINNT\INF folder and delete them.

-- C:\WINNT\INF\OEMx.INF
(NOTE)

Note: The
OEMx.INF file(s) might have a corresponding
OEMx.PNF file(s). In both of these files, the "x" is a
number 0 to n, and both use the same number. If an OEM1.INF
(for example) appears as a result of the search, then a
matching setup file OEM1.PNF might also present. Because it contains only machine code, it is not included in the search results; however, it must be deleted.

- Double-click the C:\WINNT\INF\ folder so that the folder contents appear in the right pane of Windows NT Explorer. Delete the matching OEMx.PNF file (confirm the file deletion, if needed).

Note: You may need to expand the WINNT folder to see the INF subfolder. To expand the WINNT folder, click the + symbol next to the WINNT folder in the left pane of Windows NT Explorer.

Disable the Show all files feature to prevent inadvertent damage to critical system files.
- On the View menu, click Folder Options.

- Click the View tab, and then click Show all Files (removes the active indicator).

- Click Apply, and then click OK.

Close Windows NT Explorer.

Warning: The next step may involve changes to the system registry. Incorrect changes to the system registry may cause the system to become unstable resulting in the loss of important data. For your protection, make a backup of the system registry and update the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) before continuing. Use the Microsoft Online Documentation (Help files) sections Backing Up the System Registry and Updating the ERD to assist with this effort.

Open the Registry Editor and click Start, Run, type REGEDT32, and click OK). Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine page, and remove the following registry keys if present:

- HKLM\HARDWARE\RESOURCEMAP\OtherDrivers\CBE, CBEN4, and CBENT

- HKLM\SOFTWARE\Xircom

- HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet00x\Services\CBEn,CBEN4n, CBENTn, and CBMODEM
where x=any number greater than or equal to 1; where n=blank, or any number greater than or equal to 1

- HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet00x\Services\EventLog\System\CBE,CBEN4 and CBENT
where x=any number greater than or equal to 1

- HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PCMCIA\Database\Xircom
Remove just the CardBus Ethernet + Modem specific entries under the \Xircom folder.

- After removing the registry keys, restart the computer. Reinstall using the installation instructions above.
