Idle Network Adapter Automatically Disconnects in Windows* 2000

This document applies to Xircom® CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapters (CBE, CBE2, RBE and R2BE).

This problem can be experienced as:

  • Network adapter automatically disconnects from the network after being idle for a period of time.
  • Machine is slow to browse or reconnect after idle for extended period.
  • Mapped drives have a red X on them.
To resolve this problem:

Open the Registry Editor:

1. Click Start.
2. Point to Run.
3. Type in REGEDT32 and click OK.

Note: The Registry Editor can be accessed in two ways; one by typing REGEDIT in the Run box; the other by typing REGEDT32 in the Run box. Use the REGEDT32 command since we are only interested in the entries located on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine page of the Registry. Using the REGEDIT command brings up all five pages of the Registry into one display making it more time consuming to identify and delete the necessary keys.

Locate the following registry key:

Hkey_Local_Machine\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanserver\parameters\autodisconnect

1. Double-click on autodisconnect, which is on the right-hand side.
2. The Edit DWORD Value opens. Under Base, select Hexadecimal.
3. In the Value Data box, (default value of "f"), enter seven more "f"s, for a total of eight "f"s. "ffffffff".
4. Exit the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

According to Microsoft, the time out now will be approximately 8,171 years.

This applies to:
Xircom® CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter (CBE-10/100BTX)
Xircom® CardBus Ethernet II 10/100 Adapter (CBE2-100)
Xircom® RealPort™ CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter (RBE-100)
Xircom® RealPort2™ CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter (R2BE-100)
