Will the Intel 10 Gigabit Fiber adapters connect to a 1 Gigabit connection?
No. The only mode the optics on the Intel 10 GbE Server Adapters will support is 10-gigabit full duplex. It will only connect to another 10-gigabit connection that is also using 1310 nm single-mode or 850 nm multi-mode optics.
Can I use any type of multimode fiber with the Intel 10 GbE LR Server Adapter?
No. The Intel PRO 10GbE LR Server Adapter will only use 9-micron single mode fiber. It cannot use multi-mode fiber at any length. You will need to use the Intel(R) PRO 10GbE SR Server Adapter, Intel 10 Gigabit XF SR Server Adapter or Intel 10 Gigabit XF Dual Port Server Adapter for use with multi-mode fiber.
How long of a cable can I use with the Intel 10 GbE LR Server Adapter?
The Intel® PRO/10GbE LR Server Adapter is tested to 10 Kilometers over 9-micron single mode fiber.
How long of a cable can I use with the Intel 10 GbE SR Server Adapters?
The Intel 10 GbE SR Server Adapters are tested to 33 Meters over 62.5/125um multi-mode fiber cabling. It is tested to 300 Meters over 50um multi-mode fiber.
Can I connect two Intel 10 GbE Server Adapters back-to-back without a switch?
Yes, you can connect two Intel 10 GbE Server Adapters together without a switch. However, this type of unit-to-unit connection will yield very limited performance. Maximum performance will only be achieved using many clients.
Can I use the Intel PRO/10GbE LR Server Adapter or Intel PRO/10GbE SR Server Adapter in a 32-bit slot?
The Intel® PRO/10GbE LR and SR adapters will only fit 3.3-volt slots. Few, if any, systems are equipped with 32-bit slots that are 3.3-volt only. Furthermore, a 32-bit 33MHz PCI slot cannot achieve more than 5% of the theoretical bandwidth of a 10-gigabit full duplex connection. We highly recommend using the adapter in a 133MHz PCI-X slot only, or
