Configuring the Print Server
In this task, you will configure the NetportExpress PRO or PRO/100 print server so that the various types of Windows* machines can print to the print server.
- Start Netport Manager.
- Select the print server you wish to configure.
- Click the "Configure" button.
- Click "Microsoft Network Printing".
- Enter the domain name for the print server (this only affects where the NetportExpress print server appears in the Network Neighborhood).
- Select the tab for Parallel Port 1 and click the "Use Defaults" button or enter a name for the printer; you can use a simple name like "PORT1" or a descriptive name like "HPCOLOR".
- Click OK and exit Netport Manager.
The print server will now reboot.
Installing and Test Printing from the Admin Console
In this task, you will install the Port Monitor on the administrator's workstation. If the printer is busy, Port Monitor will queue the job locally and then automatically send the print job to the printer once it becomes available. (Windows* 95 system)
- Insert the NetportExpress CD into the CD-ROM drive of the Windows NT* server.
- If the CD does not Autorun a setup program, run SETUP.EXE from the root directory of the CD.
- Select the "Install Port Monitor" option.
- When prompted, restart your system. Do so before continuing.
- From "My Computer", select "printers", then "Add Printer" wizard.
- Set up a temporary LOCAL printer on LPT1 using the printer drivers for the printer connected to the print server, but do NOT print a test page.
- Right-click on the new printer definition and click "Properties".
- Click the "Details" tab and click "Add Port".
- Select Other, then "Intel NetportExpress Network Port" and click "New Port".
- Browse to the print server and printer port or enter the print server and port name such as "\\SALES\HPCOLOR", then press OK.
- Right-click on the new printer definition and click "Properties" again.
- Click on the "General" tab and select "Print Test Page".
- Click OK to save the configuration.
Installing and Test Printing from User Workstation
Because direct printing is essentially a peer-to-peer networking arrangement, setting up each individual workstation is essentially identical to the previous task, except that it is done on the user's PC.
- Insert the NetportExpress CD into the CD-ROM drive of the Windows NT server.
- If the CD does not Autorun a setup program, run SETUP.EXE from the root directory of the CD.
- Select the "Install Port Monitor" option.
- When prompted, reboot your system.
- Browse to the print server and printer port or enter the print server and port name such as "\\SALES\HPCOLOR", then click OK.
- Right-click on the new printer definition and click "Properties" again.
- Click on the "General" tab and select "Print Test Page".
- Click OK to save the configuration.
Microsoft Direct Printing
Direct or peer-to-peer printing in a pure Windows* environment is more common in smaller networks, especially where there is not a Windows NT* server. In this scenario, the workstations print directly to the print server using port monitor.
