Setting up for a data general MV (Unix)

NOTE: These instructions were tested and reported by a customer and have not been tested by Intel.

Data General MV DG AOS/VS II rev. 3.00 or higher, DG AOS/VS II TCP/IP rev. 1.30 or higher.

Data General MV (DGMV) does not use an /etc/printcap file, so all necessary parameters are passed as variables to the LPR command. The system does run the LPD spooling daemon.

Printing to the NetportExpress™ XL print server v2.00 or higher:

  1. Set up TCP support on the NetportExpress™ XL print server as usual. Set up an IP address for each of the individual ports that will be used.

  2. In the :ETC:HOSTS file on the DG system, set up an entry for each port to be used. In the example below, the printer name is defined as "acct_lj4":

    123.456.789.123 acct_lj4 ACCT_LJ4

  3. The format of the LPR command is:

    LPR -S<hostname> -P<queue> filename

    where

hostname = name in the :ETC:HOSTS file corresponding to the IP address assigned to the port on the NetportExpress XL print server.

Queue = PASSTHRU for postscript printing, use TEXT for PCL and ASCII. The name must be in capital letters.

Filename = name of file to be printed.

Printing to the NetportExpress™ PRO or PRO/100 print server:

  1. Set up UNIX support on the NetportExpress™ PRO print server as usual by assigning an IP address to the unit.

  2. In the :ETC:HOSTS file on the DG system, set up an entry for the NetportExpress PRO print server. In the example below, the printer name is defined as "acct_lj4":

    123.456.789.123 acct_lj4 ACCT_LJ4

  3. The format of the LPR command is:

    LPR -S<hostname> -P<port><queue> filename

    where

hostname = name in the :ETC:HOSTS file corresponding to the IP address assigned to the port on the NetportExpress PRO print server.

Port = LPT1_ for parallel port 1, LPT2_ for parallel port 2, COM1_ for the serial port.

queue = use PASSTHRU for postscript printing, use TEXT for PCL and ASCII. The name must be in capital letters.

Filename = name of file to be printed.

This applies to:
Intel® NetportExpress™ PRO and PRO/100 Print Servers
