Using ARP to Assign an IP Address

ARP can only be used with the -s / -S option to assign an IP address to a device which does not already have an address assigned to it. If an IP address has been assigned and the address is incorrect, you can use Telnet or the NetPort® Manager software to access the current TCP/IP configuration and change the IP address. If you are not sure if an IP address has already been assigned or do not know what the IP address is, use the diags button on the NetportExpress® PRO print server or the NetPort Manager software to find out.

<ip address> = The IP address which is to be assigned. It is a good idea to try pinging this address first to be sure it has not already been assigned.

<network address> = The network or mac address of the print server. This can be obtained by printing the diags page from the print server or by looking at the network address stamped on the underside of the print server device. On a UNIX system, the network address is entered with a ":" following every two characters, such as 00:A0:C9:12:34:56. On a Microsoft Windows* system, the network address is entered with a "-" following every two characters, such as 00-A0-C9-12-34-56.

The parameters for this command are case sensitive. Use upper or lower case as indicated.

Using a Windows NT* workstation or file server
At a DOS (Command) prompt:
arp -S <ip address> <network address>

Using a Windows* 95 workstation
At a DOS prompt:
First ping any device, server or workstation on the network successfully in order to "wake up" the arp table on the workstation. After a successful ping:
arp -S <ip address> <network address>

Using a UNIX host (except AIX)
From a command prompt:
arp -s <ip address> <network address> temp

Using an AIX host
On an Ethernet network, from a command prompt:
arp -s ether <ip address> <network address> temp

On a Token Ring network, from a command prompt:
arp -s 802.5 <ip address> <network address> temp
