Intel® Server Board and Server System updates fall into three categories:
- BIOS
- BMC
- FRU/SDR
The BIOS, BMC and FRU/SDR should be updated to the latest available versions on every new system.
Intel recommends updating the BIOS, BMC and FRU/SDR to the latest available versions when performing system maintenance, or adding or removing hardware.
When adding new hardware, if a system is at the latest BIOS, BMC and FRU/SDR levels, then only apply the FRU/SDR package. The FRU/SDR will update the FRU and SDR areas of the BMC with the new hardware information and sensors to be monitored in the system.
Notes: BIOS is an acronym for the Basic Input/Output System. BIOS refers, in part, to the firmware code run by a system when first powered on. The primary function of the BIOS is to identify and initialize system component hardware.
BMC is an acronym for Baseboard Management Controller. The BMC is a specialized microcontroller embedded on the server. The BMC is the intelligence in the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) architecture. The BMC manages the interface between system management software and platform hardware.
FRU/SDR is an acronym for Field Replaceable Unit / Sensor Data Record. The FRU/SDR Utility is used to update the SDR & FRU areas of the BMC. The utility has the capability to generically handle FRU devices that may not be associated with the BMC. The SDR provides monitoring information of sensors in a server system.
