Clearing Memory Errors During POST

The error message shown below is a type of memory error detected during POST.

ERROR: Bad or missing memory in slot XX.

POST detected a multi-bit error which is likely caused by:

  • Bad memory chip which causes a multi-bit error
  • DIMMs used are not registered DIMMs.
  • Different combinations of DIMM type is plugged into the system.


Once this kind of error is experienced, the memory bank where the particular slot resides will be suspended by the BIOS of the system until memory retest has been done.

Memory retest can be done thru the BIOS setup utility (by pressing F2). Typically this switch is found in the "Advanced" menu then "Memory Settings" submenu of the BIOS setup utility.
