What Cable or Cables Do I Use?

How do I connect Just a Bunch of Disks (JBOD)?
Connect a JBOD to the on-board Mini-SAS connector labeled SCU_1. Use the <F2> BIOS Setup Utility, accessed during system POST, to set the software RAID option (SAS/SATA Capable Controller) to Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST).

The following products have SCU_1 enabled automatically:

  • R1208BB4DC
  • R2308BB4GC

The following products require an Intel RAID C600 Upgrade Key to enable SCU_1:

  • R1208BB4GS9
  • R1304BB4DC
  • R1304BB4GS9
  • R2208BB4GS9
  • R2312BB4GS9
Note Only Intel® Rapid Storage Technology enterprise (Intel® RSTe) mode offers drive pass-through, enabling access to drives without configuring a RAID. Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology 2 (ESRT2) mode does not offer this drive pass-through. See the Intel® RAID software users guide for related topics.

How do I connect more than eight drives in a JBOD?
If your JBOD requires more connectors than are included with the system, you need an appropriate RAID card, module, or expander. Entry Level RAID controllers such as RMS25KB040 and RMS24KB080 have JBOD support. See the product brief.

What cables come with the system? How do I get more?
Different systems come with a number of Mini-SAS/Mini-SAS (SFF-8087) cables. The complete list is in the Spares, Parts List and Configuration Guide. See page 22 of the PDF, for the lengths and connectors needed for upgrading.
