What is the link speed on expander backplanes?
Expander backplanes can have connection speeds of 3Gb/s.
| Note |
Some first generation expanders can only negotiate 1.5Gb/s speeds even if using 3Gb/s devices.
Expanders connect multiple devices to a single port initiator. Expanders may support Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or Serial ATA (SATA) devices or both.
| Note |
SATA devices may be connected to SAS backplanes, but SAS devices cannot be connected to SATA backplanes.
| Note |
Non-Expander backplanes are essentially pass-through devices and will operate at the speed of the controller.
Intel® Expander Backplanes support both SAS and SATA devices.
