Expander backplane link speed

Knowledgebase Article

What is the link speed on expander backplanes?

Expander backplanes can have connection speeds of 3Gb/s.

Note Some first generation expanders can only negotiate 1.5Gb/s speeds even if using 3Gb/s devices.

Expanders connect multiple devices to a single port initiator. Expanders may support Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or Serial ATA (SATA) devices or both.

Note SATA devices may be connected to SAS backplanes, but SAS devices cannot be connected to SATA backplanes.
Note Non-Expander backplanes are essentially pass-through devices and will operate at the speed of the controller.

Intel® Expander Backplanes support both SAS and SATA devices.

Order codes:

AXX4DRV3GEXP (4-drive SAS/SATA Expander)
AXX6DRV3GEXP (6-drive SAS/SATA Expander)
