LUN Copier FAQ

What is the Intel® LUN Copier?

It’s a tool enabling local copies of any LUN (Virtual Drive) when it is not being actively used by a compute module. This capability, which does not require any special software to be run on a compute module, simplifies tasks such as

  • creating a local copy of a data LUN and
  • creating a new OS LUN (which can be assigned to a new compute module as the boot LUN), by copying an existing LUN which already has an OS installed in it

What are the benefits of Intel® LUN Copier?

  • Copying an existing virtual drive can be used as a local backup solution (on the Intel® Modular Server only)
  • Makes OS provisioning and deployment easier and faster
  • Can be used for non-production environment testing
  • Off-line RAID morphing
    • Local back up
    • Operating System provisioning/deployment
    • Non-Production Environment testing
    • Off-line RAID morphing

What is off-line RAID morphing?

  • The Intel® LUN Copier allows copying a virtual drive from one RAID level to another when the compute module assigned to this virtual drive is switched off. This is called RAID morphing.

What do I need to use the Intel® LUN Copier?

What do I need to do to activate my Intel® LUN Copier feature?

  • Contact your reseller to purchase a paper pack ID. Product code MFSLUNCOPY MM#903085.
  • Obtain the mid plane serial number of the modular server on which the feature should be activated.
  • Please see http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-029940.htm for instructions where to find the mid plane serial number and next steps for license key activation.
