When installing an Intel® Pentium® II Processor on
the Intel® R440LX Server Board, the BIOS version on the board must
support the specific version of the processor. Otherwise, the
processor(s) will not be recognized and the system will not boot.
Determine the Version of the Processor
Intel® Pentium® II processors can be identified by their package markings. See
the Pentium II Processor Specification Update
for details.
Matching BIOS and Processor Versions
You must use a BIOS version that supports the processor you are installing, as
indicated by the processor's CPUID:
| BIOS version |
CPUID |
| BIOS 1.0 supports |
633 |
| BIOS 2.0 supports |
633, 634 |
| BIOS 2.1 supports |
633, 634, 650 |
| BIOS 3.0 supports |
633, 634, 650,
651 |

BIOS Upgrades When the Processor is Not recognized (Board Won't Boot)
Normally you can upgrade the BIOS by booting to a BIOS disk and running the
FLASH program. In order to update the BIOS when using Pentium II processors
that are not recognized by the current BIOS, follow the steps below. For reference, see the jumper settings diagram.
- Set the BIOS Recovery
Boot jumper (J2J1) to enable (pins 10-11).
- Set the FRB Timer jumper (J3J1) to disable (pins 6-7).
- Insert a bootable floppy disk containing BIOS 3 or above into floppy drive A:
- Power up and let the BIOS
flash into the board. No video is
displayed during the process. The system will beep once when it
begins the flash upgrade process. When the upgrade process is finished, you will hear 2 short beeps, and the floppy drive access
light will go out. The upgrade process takes about five minutes.
- Power down and move the BIOS
Recovery Boot jumper (J2J1) back to disable (pins 9-10)
and move the FRB Timer jumper (J3J1) to enable (pins 5-6). Remove the floppy disk.
- Move the CLK EN jumper (processor speed selection, J3J1) to enable (pins 2-3).
- Power on and go into BIOS
setup by pressing [F2] and set the correct speed for the
processor(s). Save
the settings by pressing [F10] and power off the system.
- Move the CLK EN jumper (J3J1) back to disable (pins 1-2).
- Power up.
