Power Issues

Power Supply Recommendations
Intel recommends at least a 275W power supply be used when integrating the Intel® R440LX Server Board. Exact power budgeting requirements can be found in the Technical Product Specification.

Short Power Loss
A short loss of power (between 100 ms and 800 ms) can cause the system to not boot up when power is restored. Once the server is in this condition, the system appears "dead " since pressing the on/off switch seems to have no effect.

A short power loss can occur from AC input voltage fluctuations or as a result of rapidly pressing the on/off switch several times. The workaround is to unplug the system from the power for at least 10 seconds.

Power Sequencing
The system may fail to boot if the power supply's 12 Volt line ramps to 5 Volts before the 5 Volt line fully ramps to 5 Volts. Unfortunately, there is no easy way for integrators to determine if the power supply is exhibiting this behavior. The workaround is to press Reset.

Second Processor Not Recognized on Reboot
In both cases above, if the system has two processors, one may not be recognized upon reboot. To resolve this:

  • Enter the BIOS Setup program
  • In the Server menu, set the Processor Retest value to 'Yes'
  • Save the settings
  • Reboot

This applies to:
Intel® R440LX Server Board
